Who we are

The Marlin Club is San Diego’s oldest fishing club, established in 1931, bringing together anglers who share a passion for sportfishing, camaraderie, and maritime tradition. Located on Shelter Island, the club hosts fishing tournaments, social events, and community gatherings that celebrate the spirit of the sport while preserving a rich legacy for future generations of fishermen. We also maintain a FREE certified IGFA weigh station.

history of the marlin club

The Marlin Club was organized September 15th 1931 by a small group of ardent anglers that shared the common interest of marlin fishing. These sportsmen created angling rules to ensure that all members would compete on an equal basis as well as promote sportsmanship and offshore angling in Southern California.

Many of these rules have since been adopted and used by anglers internationally. The clubhouse at 2445 Shelter Island Drive was established in 1952 with the purpose of maintaining a free, certified weigh station for the sport fishing public of San Diego.

In the early years, the Marlin Club was a small, informal organization comprised of a group of passionate anglers who would meet regularly to talk about their fishing adventures and share tips on the best techniques and places to fish. As its membership grew, the club became more organized and began hosting regular fishing tournaments and social events.

One of the most important events in the history of the Marlin Club was the establishment of the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) in 1939. This organization was founded by a group of anglers from the Marlin Club, along with others from fishing clubs around the world, with the goal of promoting sport fishing and protecting the world's game fish species. The Marlin Club continues to play an active role in the IGFA.

Throughout the 20th century, the Marlin Club grew and evolved, becoming one of the most prestigious fishing clubs in the world. The club's membership was comprised of some of the most experienced and knowledgeable anglers, and its tournaments and events attracted top fishing teams from around the globe. The Marlin Club also became a major player in the sport fishing industry, with many of its members working in the field as guides, boat builders, and tackle manufacturers.

In recent years, the Marlin Club has continued to thrive and remains a vital part of the sport fishing community in San Diego.

The club tournaments continue to draw large crowds. The Marlin Club has also been at the forefront of efforts to promote conservation and sustainable fishing practices, and works closely with organizations such as the IGFA, CCA, and the Marine Conservation Institute to protect the world's oceans and the fish that live within them.

The Marlin Club in San Diego has a long and proud history, and its impact on the sport fishing world cannot be overstated. From its humble beginnings in 1931, the club has grown and evolved into one of the most respected and influential organizations in the fishing community.
