The Marlin Club
San Diego

The purpose of the club is to maintain a free, certified weight station for the angling public of San Diego and their Guests: and also promote sportsmanship and sport angling competition among club members

The Marlin Club was organized September 15, 1931 by a small group of ardent anglers that shared the common interest of marlin fishing. These sportsmen created angling rules to ensure that all members would compete on an equal basis as well as promote sportsmanship and offshore angling in Southern California.

Many of these rules have since been adopted and used by anglers internationally. The clubhouse at 2445 Shelter Island Drive was established in 1952 with the purpose of maintaining a free certified weigh station for the sportfishing public of San Diego. The club also maintains a free catch report number updated daily, with valuable information on the how's and where's of Southern California's offshore fishing. Many other fishing organizations use the facility as a weigh station for their own tournaments. This public service is provided by the club membership through payment of their annual dues. Whether it's a catch for bragging rights or a world record claim, the club will weigh and document your catch free of charge. A professional photographer and fish processing are also available on call. If you wish to take advantage of these services, please radio ahead to make arrangements on VHF CH 78.

The Marlin club was incorporated 1958 and is a non-profit organization, which has a membership of several hundred. With family membership, juniors 16 and under are free. Members come from all walks of life and all skill levels from novice anglers to world record holders. Many members don't even own a boat.  THE MARLIN CLUB by just its name may imply "big boats' or 'marlin only.'Member boats range in size from 17 foot skiffs to 90+ft luxury yachts with may boats under 30 feet. As a MARLIN CLUB member, you become eligible for trophies and awards for such species as yellowtail, white seabass, halibut and tuna as well as marlin. Award categories for juniors, ladies, boats and individual catches are a great incentive for all to participate. The club hosts numerous tournaments and social events throughout the season for both members and the general public. Tournaments for couples, juniors, halibut, small boats and Labor Day provide something for everyone. The annual Invitational Light Tackle Tournament brings together some of Southern California's top marlin fisherman and is San Diego's most prestigious tournament.

The underlying spirit of angling should be that it is a sport in which the skill of the angler is pitted against the instinct and strength of the fish which is entitled to an even chance for its life.

The MARLIN CLUB is open during the summer "season" (from the date of the first marlin caught), daily from 2-6 p.m. With advance notification, the club staff will weigh your catch as late as 10 p.m. In the "off-season" the club is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 2-6 p.m.. Please drop by and share a fish story.

As a new member you will receive a membership packet which includes a MARLIN CLUB decal, patch and membership card entitling you to discounts at tackle stores and landings throughout San Diego.  You'll also receive "The Gaffline", our monthly newsletter informing our members of club news, upcoming events, significant catches and tackle tips from the best sources available - our own members.  The annual MARLIN CLUB yearbook is full of useful information including membership roster, club rules, IGFA regulations and summaries of the past season's trophy catches and tournament results. You can take advantage of free overnight dockage at our slips. The most valuable benefit, however, is the camaraderie and friendships that can only be made through sportfishing. For less than a newspaper subscription, you can be hooked up to San Diego's offshore information center!
