From the Bridge
by Bob Woodard, Jr, Club President

We had our annual membership meeting Tuesday, April 4, at the Southwestern Yacht Club. Unfortunately, turnout was light due to the heavy rain.

     Christine Snovel,
Director of Communications and Development and webmaster from the National Coalition for Marine Conservation was the guest speaker, keeping us up to speed on all the current issues facing sportfishermaen.

New President Charlie Been is taking the helm this year. Charlie introduced all the new and current board members and shared his game plan for the coming year. He also presented information for our coming tournament schedule and introduced the committee members.

Jim Konzal reviewed the minutes from last years meeting and reported on the status.

April is a busy month for us here at the club. Don't forget to come on by for the annual club clean up day and lend a hand on April 15 th from 8 AM till whenever it takes. Bring Paintbrushes etc... Then the following weekend on April 23rd we will be hosting our annual open house! This is held annually the same day as the Day at the Docks. A kids’ dock fishing tournament will be held from 9 AM  till 2 PM with lots of prizes and free live bait while supplies last! Also free hot dogs and soda to the first 50! So stop by and enjoy your clubhouse for awhile.

I sincerely hope we see some of that great marlin fishing we had last year come back again this year. It's been a pleasure to serve as your President for the past year and we'll see you on the grounds.
Good luck and Good Fishing and we will see you here
!

Best regards,
Bob Woodard Jr.

The 26 foot Striper "Full Cooler" owned by Marlin Club Director Doug Rodger is our featured boat of the month. Doug enjoys fishing with his primary crew David Rodger his nephew, Doug Verani and his trusty Golden Retriever "Mako".

The crew has had some big scores over the past couple years including winning the Make a Wish "Tuna Challenge" and scoring the First released Marlin for the club in 2004. One thing is for sure these guys love to fish!

Need a boat?  Member Mike Stutz is looking for a partner on his 24 ft. Skipjack.

It's Fun! & It's Free!
Sunday, April 23rd, 2006 - 9 AM to 5 PM
At the San Diego Sportfishing Landings
in Point Loma

Here is a problem you may have encountered from time to time out on the water. This is a circle hook, and fortunately, it did not penetrate past the barb. However, the hook was wedged on the finger and because of the size of this angler’s finger the point was hitting the bone.  Dikes would not cut the hook. Side cutters worked in this situation

Here’s one that is rather extreme. A jig reeled at a fast speed jumped out of the water and buried the hook past the barb into this angler’s lip!

It would have been difficult to use side cutters in this application. It seems that small boltcutters are about the most effective tool in this situation.

These are 8” bolt cutters available at Home Depot for $12. They cut this 7699 Stainless Steel 8/0 Mustad hook. Put hem in a zip lock bag or vacuum pack, so they aren’t rusted shut when you really need them.
