March 2006

From the Bridge
By Bob Woodard, Jr, Club President

Thanks to all who attended the awards banquet we had more people than we’ve had in years. Among the big winners were juniors Jack Wroncy for a huge yellowtail and David Larson for his Marlin. For the men it was Ken Yasuda who had a phenomenal year aboard his boat "ENCOUNTER" and scored the most released marlin award. Bonnie Rose Moss caught the first marlin by a lady award for the second year straight. Nice going Bonnie!
With the Fred Hall boat show upon us in Long Beach and the Del Mar show not far off the fishing community in Southern California is starting to stir. Great deals can be had at these shows and early birds definitely get the best deals so set that alarm clock.

Our first tournament for the year, the Spring Shootout is just around the corner on May 20th. This tournament will feature a Yellowtail and White Seabass Division, as well as an Albacore Division and a Halibut Jackpot. Prizes will include 4 custom rods donated by Fisherman’s Landing Tackle Shop! Be sure and mark your calendars as we anticipate more anglers and better prizes than ever!

Our annual membership meeting will be held April 4th at the Southwestern Yacht Club. Cocktails are at 6, and the meeting is at 7. We have a guest speaker from the National Coalition for Marine Conservation to keep everybody up to speed on current data and issues which constantly change. We'll be signing up help for the tournament schedule this year so take a look at the dates and lend a hand.

The White SeaBass are starting to bite at Catalina so turn over those motors and go get them. Here locally an occasional yellowtail has been brought home from La Jolla and sounds like they have had some great days off of Punta Banda for big Yellows but the bite is Hit or miss.

Good luck and Good Fishing and we will see you here!
Best regards,
Bob Woodard Jr.
