From the Bridge

Happy Holidays to all, from everyone here at the club!

This coming year marks our 75th anniversary at the Marlin Club, and we've decide to make the awards dinner into a reunion of sorts for all members past and present! So call all the old greats who are still around, and give them an invite! Rumor on the street has it that everyone who was anyone will be showing up! Were also making 75th Anniversary embroidered shirts and  jackets. More info will follow on how to order yours.

The biggest issue facing the club currently is the Port's re-development of our facility. At the Port’s request, we have provided a joint development proposal including all current tenants from North Sails to The Marlin Club. All of us are on month to month leases, and the Port is trying to complete their “Master Plan”. Seems like a pretty complex  development on leased land, but it is a good group of people so our hopes are high.

Fishing on the ridge and outside Mag Bay has been nothing short of incredible this year!!! Coming up from Cabo, KNOT FOR RENT released 41 Marlin  in one day with P-Bod at the helm. The majority of these fish are now just to the Pacific side of Cabo, where one angler was rumored to have a 51 fish day! That's a lot of pulling!!! I wonder who his accountant is? Throw in a huge volume of giant Yellowfin Tuna in the 150-275lb range, and it sure sounds like the ridge was the spot to be in November.

While the fishing season is all but over, the club  has now gone to our off season schedule. If you have a fish to weigh, call one of the numbers posted on the front door. Sounds like the Swordfish showed up here late in November, however the  commercial fleet kept the word pretty quite, so I'm not sure anyone got after them.

Fishermans Landing tackle is having their annual TACKLE DAY this Saturday, December 3rd. Lots of new tackle will be on display and it’s a great spot to pick some early Christmas presents. We'll have a booth, so stop by and check out some club memorabilia.

Good luck, good fishing and we'll see you here!
Best regards,
Bob Woodard Jr.

There are still some fish around…

Marty Morris with sons Kenneth and Daniel on the KENDAN were out on Friday, 11/25 at the 178 when they spotted this ‘two finner’.

Marty reported:
We had worked up the line past Del Mar and turned around heading back south. In mid-afternoon the blue sky started to poke through. AT 1500 (3 PM) Daniel pointed out the sight of a spotter plane heading in our direction and towards the plank boat up above. He questioned why they were coming out so late. My reply was a suggestion that with the incoming tide and a late 'high' the fish might be showing a little later than normal. About two minutes later Daniel slammed on the brakes and uttered those magic words: 'Xiphias gladius' (actually he used the translation: SWORD FISH). And there they were - those two classic fins (Picture above) - sitting high and dry. We were just outside of the 178 and within minutes the plane found us and the plank boat, off in the distance, put it into the 'smokehole.'

One of the beautiful squids that had been rigged, went into the water and for the next 30 minutes it was the slow troll on one engine trying to keep up with the constantly turning prey - usually away from us. On at least two occasions Kenneth got the squid close to the creature and once it almost looked like it 'kicked' and headed towards the bait, but it was not hungry. Perhaps a little too much turkey the day before. Slowly, the fins dropped deeper into the water with the fin tips barely showing. At times you could follow the swirl in the water. Finally, Ken threw the largest mackeral we had in the direction of the creature, but no go. This time it sank out and disappeared from sight. Of course, by this time the plank boat was on scene and as we ventured south we looked back and could see someone 'taking a walk,' but don't know the results.

Have you read or heard about the Black Marlin, Bill Shedd, Guy Harvey and Neil Patrick tagged on January 25, 2005 off Panama with a satellite pop up tag? The fish was hooked on 50 pound test, and once they decided to tag it, Guy put on scuba gear, jumped in the water and added another 80 pound rig for Bill Shedd to lend a hand in bring the fish to the boat.

The Black Marlin estimated weight was 1,300 lbs plus. It was tagged with Pfleger Research Institute pop up archival tag #45879. It was tagged at Zane Gray reef near the Panama Tropic Star Lodge on January 25, 2005 at 1:00 pm. The tag popped up on March 23, 2005. The marlin had traveled approximately 1,250 nautical miles.
