The Gaff Line

August 2005

From the Bridge
By Bob Woodard, Jr, Club President

When will the Marlin arrive???? The past Presidents’ picks for the 1st Marlin this year were:
Wayne Slahor-August 18, Ed Waldman-July 19 and yours truly-July 23.

Well it sounds like there are a few around as the sport boats have started hooking a few over the last couple weeks. This is usually a good sign that the fish will start to arrive in better volume on our local banks. Even a handful of Dorado have been reported! The report from the sport boat Top Gun last week said they encountered five marlin during an albacore stop, but the story varies. Would have been fun to be a fly on the wall there! Other reports of Marlin are starting to trickle in so sharpen those hooks and put the big jigs out. The First Release Flag and the First Marlin of the year flag are still up for grabs, so good luck to all. ILTT sign up sheets are now available at the club or online. For info call Charlie Been. http://www.themarlinclub.com/2005/ILTT/2005-ILTT-Flyer.htm

The albacore fishing has been good but the bite which was once as close as 45 miles seems to have dried up, and the fish are now between the Airplane and the Dumping grounds. Our annual Juniors tournament is coming up on August 20, so help us teach some kids to fish and take some juniors fishing. There will be a potluck dinner and BBQ August 26 at the club, and everyone is invited. The Presidents Couples Tournament is set for the August 27th. Hope to see you there. Call me with any questions. The Albacore tournament was cancelled due to lack of early sign ups. Please help to support the club by entering the tournaments and getting those entry forms in early. It sure helps the event coordinators who volunteer many hours of time and hard work to make it all happen.

The busy season is once again upon us, and this is the busiest time of year for members using the docks. The two biggest problems we are having with members abusing the privileges are the 72 hour time limit and not locking the gate. These rules are not negotiable, and we reserve the right to rescind these privileges for non compliance to all dock rules! Download a copy of the dock rules at www.themarlinclub.com/docks.htm
This just in....6:20 PM on July 29th, the Albacore fishing blew wide open for several private boaters on the way home from fishing the albacore grounds today. The fishing was full limits for the boats that got in the area of approximately 5 miles south of the 390 bank this afternoon.

Good luck, good fishing and we'll see you here!
Best regards,
Bob Woodard Jr.

Mackerel Bait

The marlin season is about to kick off. Each year, roughly half the fish are caught on lures and the other half on bait. Nothing is more exciting that casting live bait to a marlin and hooking up.

There are several ways to have mackerel for the marlin trips. First you can try to buy them from the Everingham Bait operation, but it’s rare that they have any. You can get up a little earlier and hope to make bait by catching your own before starting your trip.

Or you can build your own bait receiver and keep it at your slip. Then you can make short trips at your convenience to stock your receiver.

AN INEXPENSIVE (SEAL-PROOF) BAIT RECEIVER

All components can be purchased at Home Depot. If you don’t have any - purchase a package of the Teflon Zip ties (Electrical Dept).

From the Garden Department, in the back they have 4’ x 8’ sheets of white lattice work.  Get two of the sheets with the smaller (1” x1”) openings. They also have 8’ “H” (in x-section) boards used to connect two edges of the lattice (not necessary, but makes it more sturdy) Roll one of the sheets and connect the edges with the Zip ties (with or without the connecting Board. If used cut the 8’ board in half)

You now have a 4’ tall cylinder about 30” in diameter. Place the cylinder on the second sheet and trace out three circles – 2 will be slightly larger than the cylinder and 1 slightly smaller. Connect one of the large circles to the bottom of the cylinder with the zip ties. Make sure that the smaller circle is smaller than the inside of the cylinder so that it will rise up and down easily.

Get a length of the heavier walled ¾” PVC pipe and 3 PVC T’s. At the end of a 4’ section of the pipe, glue on one of the T’s and make a large “H” that will fit under the smaller circle. Tie it in place with the “H” under the circle. This will act as a “lifting handle” used to raise that attached circle.

Again, make sure the inner smaller circle is small enough to ride up and down easily and not too loose at the edges (so that the mackerel don’t get under the circle). Place some weight (bricks, tiles, etc) on the bottom of the cylinder – under the smaller (lifting circle) – weights will be needed since the plastic lattice tends to float. Attach the second larger circle to the top and use the zip ties to make a hinge and use whatever lock you might find useful (or none if you have honest neighbors).

Get several Styrofoam floats and attach to the top of the receiver (otherwise those weights will sink the whole apparatus). The smaller circle with the PVC “lifting handle” now acts as a crowder and makes it much easier to get the bait out.

Tight lines and good fishing!

Every year Western Outdoors (the magazine version of WON) comes out with a list of the “Top Ten Private Anglers”. Long time member Marty Morris– KEN DAN is included on this years list for the "Top Ten Private Anglers" in all of the Southland. Congratulations Marty!

The 2005 yearbooks are now available at the club.

Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
