From the Bridge
By Bob Woodard, Jr, Club President

Congratulations to Ann Beigun on winning the annual Don Blackman Memorial Halibut tournament, and for keeping the boys in check with her 33.1 lb monster. See below for full list of results. And thanks to Chris and Mike for doing a great job on the tournament.

Summer is here, and with a little luck the Marlin won't be far behind. Our next tournament is the Albacore Tournament on July 16.  The most recent reports show the Albies are moving up and are currently being caught between 65-85 miles from Point Loma on a 180 to 190 degree heading.  I realize that is pretty vague, but it sounds like there is a big volume of fish spread throughout this area.  For information on the Albacore Tournament, contact Bob James.  For the most recent numbers call Bob Vanian at 976-BITE.

Many thanks to the crew of the Conquest and Captain Doug Reed for the good times had by all on our Kids’ Fishing Trip. We had great fishing for Sand Bass and Barracuda which kept the kids busy all day! Our next Kids’ fishing trip will be a 1/2 day trip later this summer or early fall. These trips are paid for by our Kids’ Fishing Fund which we started with this purpose in mind 3 years ago. If you have any ideas on fund raisers for our Kids’ Fishing Fund please contact me directly.

I just returned from the Kona Kailua region of the big island, and fishing was great. I was able to land a 165 lb AHI just 45 minutes out of the harbor on my 1st day!  I was fishing aboard Capt. Dennis Cintas’ "Intrepid",  and the fish ate a "malolo" bait. The 2nd day of my trip I rented a 20 ft center console and went fishing solo on the 1000 fathom curve which is just 3 miles from the harbor in Kona.  After trolling for about an hour, my short flat line on the starboard corner gets hammered by a big Blue Marlin, and the reel starts to scream!  I start to clear the teaser and see the fish has now jumped over all my lures and is greyhounding up the port side of the boat. What a great show!  The fish looks to be 300 lbs or better!  Unfortunately, I once again pay the price for fishing with lighter than recommended tackle in Kona, and the 50 lb main line breaks.  It seems every year when I fish Kona, I have great experiences and meet some of the best people in the world. To contact Dennis Cintas for a charter call (808) 987-9889. To rent a skiff and give it a go on your own, call Eric McCormick at Kona Boat rentals (808) 326-9155.

With our busy season upon us, I once again ask for your full cooperation in abiding by our club and dock rules ,making the club a great spot for all of our members to enjoy for years to come.

Best regards,
Bob Woodard Jr.

I have fished with Mike for 30 years. Our techniques are not much different from anyone else, but it's his uncanny feel and his knowledge of the habits of the fish. We also pay our dues and put the time on the water! - Andy Norton

Welcome New Member:   Bill Miholich

His son bought the membership for his dad. Nocholas is a fireman with the Huntington Fire Department. They live in Carlsbad and their boat is a 51 footer named KNOT FOR RENT.

The highs and lows of fishing. June 17, Bob catches a 165 pound Ahi in Hawaii, and not long after aboard the Drop Back, had to be towed back to the harbor.
