The Gaff Line

March 2005

From the Bridge
By Bob Woodard, Jr, Club President

I have been coming to the Marlin Club since I was 3 years. One day my father took the whole family out and caught a striped marlin on his 20 ft. Morgan craft. This would be a day that changed my life forever. Information on the hot marlin bite off San Diego was received from his brother Bill Woodard. It was off to San Diego from our home in Orange County for my first marlin fishing experience in So Cal. With that memory some 34 years behind us, I must say it is an honor to be your new president.

My first order of business is a sincere thanks to Wayne Slahor our club president for the last 3 years. Wayne was re-elected to the Board of  Directors this year, and has spent numerous hours running the ship over the last 3 years. Thank you Wayne!  Thanks also to Wayne's wife Charlie for heading the Gaff Line and all her other contributions over the past couple years. Speaking of the Gaff Line, our Web Master Dennis Albert will be taking over our monthly news letter. It has never been easier to be involved: simply e-mail Dennis any information or photos you may have and we will try to incorporate them in the Gaff Line.

Being the only fishing club with it's own facility, I personally invite all of you to come down to our annual club clean up day April 16 and help us to preserve and maintain our club. The list this year is quite extensive and we will be at the club from 8AM on. A few items on the list are painting, landscaping, dock repairs, renovate kitchen, strip and varnish the bar and many more. We have new carpet donated by club member Bill Savell and we are currently looking for someone to install this carpeting. Please contact us with any suggestions.

In closing I ask only one thing of you as members and that is your participation in Club events. See you at Clean up day April 16!

         Best regards,
         Bob Woodard Jr.

We just got confirmation on the room at the Southwestern YC for the annual membership meeting on 4/5/05. Cocktails at 6:30 and Meeting at 7:00 PM. We are still working on a speaker for this meeting, turns out Bill Boyce will be out of town.

February Meeting Minutes

  • Tournament committee members were announced.

  • Dock usage was discussed and a set of formal rules will be prepared for
board approval at the next meeting.

  • By-law changes
    1.Eliminate 2,4,6lb buttons for marlin
    2. Propose that Board members have the right to vote by proxy.

  • A mandatory participation clause for new members was discussed to ensure members are joining for the right reasons(not just to use the docks).

  • A Weighmaster program will certify that proper usage and knowledge of  all scales at the club is known by anyone operating said scales.

Charles Been aboard his GREEN BEEN - We caught these squid Wednesday 2/9/05.  We kept 10 and left when no one wanted the rod anymore.  These squid are work as you know.  I haven't worked as hard on a fish since I was on a large tuna several years ago.  At first we found the squid on the bottom in about 540 Ft of water on the outside of the 9 mile bank.  These were the smaller ones. Then we moved over on the bank in about 400 ft of water and started catching the larger squid at about 100-150 ft.  We came up with two squid heads with the body missing.  Something big was out there having supper.  We caught 9 of the 10 on a squid bat with a flashing light above it.

This is a picture of Ed Thompson
praying to the squid gods.

Wayne Slayhor was going to show us how buff he is and decided to bring a squid in stand up with no rod belt or harness.  That was the last squid he wanted to tangle with that night.

Wayne clarifies:
This is a picture of the squid that I caught while fishing with Charlie Been. This is the one that I had to fight normally. Also I was told that the rod holders were reserved for the chronologically challenged.

1st Flag of the Year Award!

Now that all of the 2004 Awards have been announced, distributed and recorded it is timely that we announce one award that, normally, would not be awarded until next year. It is an award that has been hidden away in the dark corners of the back closet since the Club's incorporation, an award that even Lois Ibey knows little of. In fact, this award has never been bestowed on any of the current members and, chances are, it may never be awarded again. But, in view of current events, it is hereby announced that the winner of the 1st Jumbo Squid of the Year award goes to, who else?, but Harry Okuda  - for a job well done. You know the old saying: "If there is a fish in the ocean, Harry will, at least, try to catch it." Congratulations Harry! (Sorry, Harry, no flag. Just a bag of bread crumbs.)

SQUID RECIPE

From Charlotte Slahor:

Here is a great squid recipe Wayne and I tried - it was awesome!

Giant Squid with Lemon Vinaigrette
4 servings (more like 3 servings for us squid lovers)

Ingredients:
4 pieces   bacon diced (or prosciutto)
1/2 cup    finely-diced red onion
1             red bell pepper sliced thin strips
2 cups     diagonally cut (2") fresh asparagus
3             garlic cloves
1/4 cup    extra-virgin olive oil
2             lemons juice only
2 tbl        white wine vinegar
1/2 tsp    Dijon mustard
1 pinch      granulated sugar
1/2 cup   chopped fresh basil leaves
1 1/2 cup sliced squid
Salt to taste
Freshly ground black pepper to taste
1/2 cup   freshly grated parmesan cheese

In a large skillet over medium heat, lightly brown bacon. Add onion, bell pepper and asparagus and cook until asparagus is just barely cooked, but still crisp.

Add garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, vinegar, mustard and sugar. Stir to blend and heat for 2 minutes.

Add basil and squid. Cook for 30 seconds to 1 minute. Season with salt and pepper and top with cheese.

Another 1st Flag of the Year Award!

Current events have covered reports of a possible rat infestation on D-Dock of the Kona Kai Marina. At least 2 boats have encountered visitors in the nite with the usual tell-tale little black ovules marking their presence. Of course, chewed up reel handles, shredded paper, premature shortening of red licorice strips, and unauthorized entry into various plastic containers also helped to identify the nature of the intruders. So out came those super stick trays and a few appropriately placed spring traps. Result: 3 near misses. One of the stickums was found across the salon upside down and the sticky surface covered with gray fur. And twice the traps with a variety of peanut butter and/or cheese had been sprung with no evidence of an intruder. Undaunted, more cheese, more peanut butter and even some red licorice. And then, success. Those spring traps are so strong they could break your (its) neck - it did! As Jimmy Cagney might have said: "Ooh, you dirty rat!."  And confirming the identify of the creature was the absence of fur on the side of his (hopefully not her) flank.

And so - in recognition of this victory over nature - and, no, releasing was not considered - the winner of this most prestigious award goes to:
