The Marlin Club of San Diego Monthly Newsletter

From the Bilge
By Wayne Slahor, Club President

As of this printing, we have recorded 117 fish (catch and release). Is this the end of the season? I think there are a few stragglers out there. There have been a lot of swordfish boats out there looking for those two finners. Lets get out there and look around – don’t forget the heavy gear and those rigged squids that everyone’s been keeping in their freezer.

We are looking for a few good men (or women) to serve on the Board of Directors. If you are an active member and are interested in helping your club achieve its goals, give us a call. Next month we will start publishing the names of the nominees and their biographies.

Board Meeting Notes  - Last month we promised to talk twice as much because we skipped a meeting.  This month it was hard to control the group – they had a lot of sea stories, fishing tales, etc. to talk about – but once we got on track this is what we discussed.

  • Kurt Brickly presented several ideas for generating funds and increasing awareness of the club.  One idea was to sell logo coffee mugs. Another idea was a boat safety inspection.
  • Reviewed tournament results – ILTT basically broke even due to the high cost of the food and less boats entered than last year.  Small Boat tournament was better this year and showed a profit.
  • Fred Larson presented an idea to hold informational seminars especially basic Marlin fishing.
  • It was suggested that we purchase a banner with interchangeable letters to be used for various events.
  • Club hours – it was voted to change club hours back to the weekends only.
  • A list of names was generated for the potential nominees for the 2005 Board of Directors’ election.
  • House repairs were discussed – need new flag pole ropes, also the hoist will be taken apart by Harold Weimer to find out what is wrong with it so we can get it repaired.
  • Life jacket loaner program was discussed and was decided that it was successful and will pursue for next year.
  • Second membership meeting was discussed for November/December but decided it’s not enough time to put together for November and that December would not be a good month to hold it.
  • Kids Fishing Fund – We are moving ahead with plans to set up a trip in the very near future.  Stay tuned for details.
