The Marlin Club of San Diego Monthly Newsletter

From the Bilge
By Wayne Slahor, Club President

So far it has been a GREAT season.  We have over 110 catches and releases on the board. The fish Gods have been good to me as I have managed to catch two Marlin this year!  The tournaments have gone well and I’d like to thank everyone for observing our no parking rules during the tournaments – it has helped out tremendously.

We do have one area of concern and that is our hoist. It officially died while weighing in a fish for the ILTT.  We have to address this sometime this year and possibly replace it. If you know of anyone in the business please contact me personally.

There are no Board meeting minutes from last month due to the majority of the directors being out fishing or otherwise not available. We promise to talk twice as much at the next meeting.

There are still lots of fish out there from Oceanside to the Coronado Islands. All you have to do is be in the right place and the right time – and, of course, pay attention.

Marlin “Down Under”

Makes 4 servings
4   8 oz Marlin steaks
2 tbl Olive oil
1 tsp Fresh ginger root, grated
1/8 tsp Black pepper
˝ cup Lemon Juice
1 tsp Dijon mustard
˝ tsp Cayenne pepper

  1. In a bowl, combine the lemon juice, oil, ginger, mustard, cayenne pepper and black pepper to make a marinade.
  2. Marinate the fish in the marinade for 30 minutes.
  3. Pre-heat your grill.
  4. Grill the fish, brushing several times with the marinade, until cooked through, about 4 to 5 minutes on each side.
  5. Serve with a fresh tomato salad.
  • Suggested wine: Champagne, Blanc de Blanc, Fume Blanc.
  • NOTES: A spicy dish that you won’t forget. Try it with your favorite mustard instead of Dijon.

Have a fish recipe you would like to share. Send it over to Charlie at slahorw@aol.com.
We’d love to share it with our members.

Charles Been had to stay out so late to
catch this fish that he missed the weigh
 in time for the SBT.

Great job to Charles & crew!

Words of Wisdom
Shared by Marty Morris

“Fishing seems to me to be divided, like sex, into three most unequal parts,

the two larger of which, by far, are anticipation and recollection,

and in between, by far, the smallest of the three, actual performance.”
