The Marlin Club of San Diego Monthly Newsletter

From the Bilge
By Wayne Slahor, Club President

FIRST MARLINS OF THE YEAR HAVE BEEN TAKEN

7/30 First Release goes to Doug Rodgers of the boat “FULL COOLER” – southwest of the 371 spot.

8/7   First Catch goes to Chuck Smith of the boat “SEA TREK IV” – 90 lbs, taken on a lure at the 138 spot.

Congratulations to our anglers (Doug & Chuck) for being first and winning the flags!!  Side note: Greg Rogers caught and released another marlin in approximately the same area a couple days later.

As far as the President’s pick goes – Shirley Blackman picked 7/29 and Rich Johnson picked 8/7.  Great, great, great picks from many years of experience.

The first Sundowner for the club this fishing season was held July 24 at the Club.  And I must say I was VERY disappointed at the turn-out. We would like to say “thanks” to the few that did show up!!

In addition, the July 17th Albacore Tournament was cancelled due to lack of participation.  Does this mean the club is no longer a “fishing club”?  A place to enjoy each other’s fishing stories?  With this type of participation we may as well give in to the Port Commission – all our fighting to keep the current space and integrity of our historical site must be for not?

With that in mind – We need you to sign up for our up-coming events! We have two tournaments this month:  The Junior’s Tournament on August 14th and the Couples Tournament on August 21st.   Let’s get out there and show your club (fishing) spirit!

Chuck Keyte Caught A Rare Oil fish

Weighed in at 35 lbs and was caught while on a 2-day trip. If you want to see what one of these fish look like – stop by the club. Don’t wait too long Scripps has been contacted and is interested in picking it up.
