Coronado Terminal

Have you recently heard about the proposed oil facility near the Coronado Islands?  This terminal presents a concern for all fisherman and boaters in Southern California.  See our website for details and download a letter to send to Chevron/Texaco stating your concerns or send an email to:  Comment@chevrontexaco.com

In Memoriam

I’m sad to say that a long time club member and past Director, Chris Newman, passed away on May 20, 2004.  Our prayers go out to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.

Board of Directors Meeting Notes:

  • Board is looking into scheduling speakers for sundowners.

  • Buck knife order approved and submitted

  • Reviewed the Spring Shootout Results – looks like this tournament is growing into a successful event

  • Shimano reel order was discussed and will order as soon as we receive order form

  • Discussed upcoming Halibut tournament status

  • More discussion about boat insurance and we will start enforcing this month

  • Fish of the month – Yellowtail

  • Marlin seminar at Southwestern Yacht Club was discussed

  • Awards update – all club trophies should be updated by the end of June

  • Hoist maintenance – need to run the hoist on a weekly basis so it won’t lock up – we can do this regularly but would be nicer if there was a fish hanging from it!

  • Afterwards we had an Albacore Tournament Meeting to confirm up the details of this tournament – flier is produced and out for review. Everything should be in place soon.

REMINDER TO ALL MEMBERS:  If you wish to berth your boat at our docks, you MUST have “Proof of Insurance” on file with the club. You can mail a copy of your insurance to the club or drop it off. It is important that this is done prior to using the docks. Thanks!

MAINTAINANCE Q&A

How often should I check the zinc rods on my diesel’s raw-water cooling system, and what is the procedure? M.K., via e-mail

Most engine manufacturers recommend inspecting and/or replacing zincs every 50 hours, but check your owner’s manual for specifics.

Inspection is quick and easy. First locate the zincs. Sometimes they are visible by their brass or red tops. Otherwise, check your manual. Unscrew each rod and tap it lightly. If it flakes, breaks, or shows signs of deterioration, replace it. As with fuel and oil filters, it’s a good idea to change all rods at the same time. When installing a new rod or reinstalling an old one, run your finger around the threads with Teflon paste. No adhesive is required. Painting the tops will make them easier to find.
