By Wayne Slahor, Club President
On a sad note, Gary Jasper, owner of the Wait n’ sea, a long time club member and friend, passed away on February 14, 2003 after surgery. Gary and wife, Lynn, have been active in the sportfishing world for the past 30 years or better; Gary held the record for Marlin on 50lb test at 339 lbs. We‘ll miss him greatly.

A Message from the National Coalition for Marine Conservation.

(Remember their presentation from our last membership meeting?)

The NCMC very much enjoyed making a presentation to be the Marlin Club of San Diego during your meeting on April 2, 2002. We enjoyed meeting everyone and learning more about your interests. Because we met so many anglers during our club visits who expressed an interest in becoming more involved in promoting sustainable ocean fisheries, we have started a new program this year. It is called "E-mail Action Network" which will provide brief (1-2 paragraphs) periodic updates and action alerts about fish and fishing related issues that concern you. We will have several lists you can join, depending on what you fish for or are interested in (i.e., one for dolphin/wahoo, one for striped bass/menhaden, etc.)

Our purpose here is to keep interested anglers informed on the issues, and notify you of opportunities when you can take an active role in conserving fisheries by weighing in with public officials.

Example of an action alert item: the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is making changes to fishing regulations for a (particular species in your area) that would directly effect recreational anglers, and has opened up a 60 day comment period… The alert will contain specific instructions on how to comment, to whom and when, with suggested points to make.

Example of an update: NMFS just approved the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s highly migratory species management plan…

OUR POLICY: We are mindful of the volume of e-mail you receive each day and will provide you only with the information described above. In addition, we respect your privacy. Your e-mail address will not be given sold to any outside source. It will only be used for E-mail Action Network purposes within NCMC. In addition, e-mail lists will not contain visible e-mail addresses, so others on the list will not see your address. If at any time you wish to be removed or added to a particular list, changes will be made immediately or as soon as possible.

If interested, please send the following information to NCMC:

Name (required):
Club/Association affiliation (required, for our information only):
City, State:
E-mail address (required):

Be sure to indicate your area(s) of interest:
Atlantic/Gulf of Mexico large pelagic fish (swordfish, sailfish, marlin, tuna, sharks)
Pacific large pelagic fish (swordfish, sailfish,Marlin, tuna, sharks)
Dolphin (dorado)/wahoo

E-mail the information to Christine Snovell at the NCMC: Christine@savethefish.org.

If there are any questions or problems, please call Christine directly at 704-777-1449. You can always sign up over the phone too!
