The Marlin Club of San Diego Monthly Newsletter

From the Bilge

Well, its already November and our fish count did not increase by any great leaps and bounds. Lets not call this season over yet! There are still a few fish being seen. A few weeks ago the Morris’ reported seeing a fish down on the knuckle. I’m not sure why they didn’t catch it, as they have been catching everything else this year.

Stop on by the club and check out the changes that are in the works. We are expanding our outside storage area and looking forward to getting some electric outlets and lights installed.

The new storage area needs a new canvas cover. If you happen to have a large cover laying around – we sure could use it. Or if you have an idea for a cover let us know.

Once completed, we will have easier access to our tables and chairs as well as room for an extra refrigerator and freezer.

Special "thanks" to our house committee for their time and effort!

SPORTFISHERS HAIL LONGLINES-BAN PLAN

The Pacific Fisher Management Council, let by the state Department of Fish and Game, unanimously adopted a key fisheries plan that prohibits the use of pelagic longlines and small mesh drift gill nets within the 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone of the U.S.

The plan now goes to the National Marine Fisheries Service for review before the Secretary of Commerce makes the final decision.

Trophy Hunt Update

By Bob Woodard Jr.

As the year draws to an end I feel we all ended up a little disappointed with the marlin fishing in southern California. However, there are still lots of marlin in the pacific. I write this from onboard the Christina Lynn and today we released 18 strippers. Not to be bragging, just trying to keep all our hopes high for warm water and a productive year for 2003. With that said, the current standings are:

Marlin Greg Tinney 177 lbs
Albacore Brad Stiles 42.8 lbs
Bluefin Tuna Marty Morris 80 lbs
Yellowtail Bob Hargrave 32.14 lbs
Halibut J.B. Bingham 35.5 lbs
White Seabass Billy Miyagawa Jr. 55 lbs
Dorado Harold Weimer 16.4 lbs
Swordfish Open
Flyrod Fish Barry Rockwell 22.4 lbs (alby)

ONE DAY ON MY BOAT
by Jack Wroncy, age 10

One day I was going out on my boat. We were going out to the tuna grounds with one of our best friends, her name is Caroline. The reason why she was one of mine and Dad’s best friends is because she used to live here in San Diego. But now she lives in San Francisco where her and her husband have a boat and they took us fishing when we didn’t have a boat.

My Dad went on a trip with them and they caught 18 Yellow Fin Tuna.

One day fishing, we went to the Tuna grounds and we saw Yellow Fin Tuna jumping straight up into the air and we didn’t even get a bite and then when we were coming back the wind started to pick up and the sea started to get rough. And we started to get wet and it was kind of funny because Caroline was in the cabin sleeping. And when we got back to the dock, we were soaking wet.

The day before, my Dad went out and they caught 2 Yellow Tail. I was kind of disappointed because we didn’t catch any fish that day. But I know that even though we didn’t catch any fish, I still had fun.

REGRILLED FISH PATTIES
By Chef No-Tale

These delicious patties make use of leftover grilled fish. Remember that the fish is already cooked and must be watched carefully so it does not burn. This recipe serves 4.

2 cups flaked leftover grilled fish
1 ½ cups fine fresh bread crumbs
2 tbls evaporated milk or cream
4 eggs
4 scallions, chopped fine
¼ cup dried currants
6 tbls coarsely chopped pecans
1 teas ground allspice
½ teas salt
Few grinds of pepper
Oil for brushing patties

  1. Combine all ingredients except the oil in a large bowl.
  2. Scoop out a scant ½ cup and form into a compact, 3" diameter round patty. Repeat with the remaining mixture; you should have eight patties.

Brush the patties with oil and place on the prepared grill. Grill for about 3 minutes on one side, then brush with oil and carefully turn the patties using a spatula. Cook for an additional 3 minutes or until done. Transfer to a serving platter and serve immediately.

A Thought…
"The proper bait, live or artificial, is what you took so much pains to get yesterday, but, which in your haste to be off today, you left at home."
