FEBRUARY – 2002

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The Club’s Annual General Meeting is scheduled for April 2ndat Southwestern Yacht Club. Time will be announced in next month’s Gaffline. By-laws changes will be presented and a quorum will be necessary in order to vote. Please try to attend. Details of the proposed changes will be in the next Gaffline and will relate to a change in the time of voting for new Board members. In addition, it has been proposed to reduce the size of committees from 5 to 3. A speaker, Tim Hobbs, Fisheries Project Director for the National Coalition for Marine Conservation, is scheduled to speak. In addition, current information regarding the Port Authority’s latest plans will be presented by the Club’s Port committee: RICH HAMILTON, SKETE SIMMONS, DON BLACKMAN, et al.

There will also be a presentation (and lively discussion) of a re-structuring of the Board’s proposed new (voluntary) Membership Categories.

A new ballot with a complete slate of 6 candidates for the Board of Directors is being sent as we speak. Please return your vote A.S.A.P. and we hope to be able to present the new Board at the Meeting.

The schedule of Club events for this year will be the same as last year with each date one day earlier. There will be no Sundowners. A full list will be forthcoming. There will be no Big Fish Tournament in March – we will simply list outstanding achievements each month.

POP-UP (OFFSHORE TOURNAMENT) TAG RESULTS: Four of the 5 tags placed during the Club’s Offshore Invitational Tag & Release Tournament sent off their recorded data, via satellite as programmed. The results, according to Dave Holtz at the Marine Fisheries in LaJolla, showed that 1 of the fish apparently died, another may have died, and their data was lost. Of the two survivals one reached Cabo San Lucas and the other Mag Bay. This tends to lend credence to the thought that our fish migrate up and down the coast and all do not necessarily migrate southwest into unknown waters of the eastern Pacific. Both fish remained within 50’ of the surface. Four (4) is hardly a figure of statistical significance, but, considering that all were bait fish and demonstrated a 50% survival rate then perhaps jig fish might survive at a higher rate (75% +/-???). These are certainly higher figures than the world-wide reports of 2% tag recoveries. The figures also compare to those from Mag Bay last year (i.e. 2000) when only a 50% (or less??) recovery rate was found.

Unfortunately, there is no way of following the released, but untagged fish. Considering the trauma associated with the tagging process we can only suppose that these fish (i.e. the untagged releases) have a higher survival rate, but – how high??????

F.Y.I.: The Feb-Mar issue of the Australian Blue Water Boat and Sportfishing magazine has a nice article about the Riviera Rodeo at Mag Bay this past fall. 11 boats (7 Rivieras) including TRENT HULS’ "Marlin Man" were among the participants. Non-Rivieras included RICH JOHNSON’s "Marie B" and Dave Denholm’s "Espadon." This same gathering was reviewed in the current edition of Southcoast Sportfishing.

And – for your viewing pleasure – if you missed the Discovery Channel 4-part series "Blue Planet" watch for re-runs and it can also be obtained from the Channel. Anyone interested in the biology of the ocean will enjoy these films with underwater shots of feeding Marlin, Tuna, and even birds are the most spectacular any of us have seen. Maybe someone will donate the series to the Club video library.

OSAMA BEWARE: We have just been informed that SEAN MULROONEY, he of the U.S. Navy, has just been accepted to flight school. It won’t be long before he is zooming around at Mach 2. Top Gun??? A little spotting for us in your off time, SEAN?

THANK YOU: The Board of Directors wishes to extend a special "Thank You"  to ART PONCE for stepping in and fixing the Club House electrical woes.

FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

Dear Marlin Club Member:

It’s that time of the year again to renew your membership at the Marlin Club. A letter was sent out about a month ago describing our financial need at the club. The letter spoke of new membership categories allowing you to contribute to the club (on a voluntary basis) over and above the regular club membership dues. The idea was to allow you a way to help the Marlin Club in a time of financial need and get some reward in return via items such as Marlin Club clothing, an ad in the Yearbook, and special listing in the Yearbook.

It has been brought to our attention that a formal chanage of membership categories requires a By-Laws change via a vote of the membership. Since the time of immediate need is immediateas we are preparing for the 2002 season we are not able ti implement changes in these membership categories before club dues are payable.

What we have now done is to restructure the exact same concept of voluntary contribution and reward into "packages" that do not contemplate a formal change of membership. When it comes time to pay your regular membership dues we ask that you contributeextra money as you are able over and above your regular membership dues. We stress that this program is voluntary and that you are under no obligation to pay anyting above your regular dues.

If you do chose to participate in one of the bonus packages listed below, you will receive the described rewards and recognition in the way of Marlin Club clothing, listing in the yearbook as well as the indicated ad:

Sustaining Contributor Package $250

(Those who support the Club with the Sustaining package get payment of their annual personal or family membership dues along with the Yearbook recognition, a Club T-shirt and Club hat)

Sponsor Package $500
(Those that support the club with the Sponsor Package get payment of their annual personal or family membership dues along with Yearbook recognition, a free ½ page ad in the yearbook, a Club T-shirt and Club hat)

Benefactor Package $1,000
(Those that support the Club with the Benefactor Package get payment of their annual personal or family membership dues along with yearbook recognition, a free full page ad in the Yearbook, a Club T-shirt and a Club hat)

If you can help out, it will be greatly appreciated and please remember that your contributions are for the enhancement of your club’s facilities, activities and the programs which support the future of our sport. Thanking you in advance,

The Marlin Club Board of Directors

ANOTHER FIRST: As we have already recorded the 1st Albacore and 1st Tuna of the Year honors KEN MORRIS wishes to claim the "1st Sailfish Released by a Marlin Club Member in the Pacific waters off Costa Rica" Award. Sorry, KEN, no flag!

2001 AWARDS: The Marlin Club’s Annual Awards Dinner was held on Saturday, February 2 at the Bali Hai restaurant on Shelter Island. Approximately 60 individuals were present to witness the presentation of the many angling awards (somewhat cut short by the exceptionally poor fishing season). A complete list of these awards will be sent with next month’s Gaffline. A lively raffle was held during the proceedings and the Club wishes to thank those who so actively participated.

T-SHIRTS FOR SALE: The Club has a number of 2000 Offshore Invitational Tournament T-Shirts that are available for a reasonable price: $7.50 or 2 for $10. We have limited quantities of some sizes so check with WAYNE, Lil or Penny
