OCTOBER, 2000
Before getting into the fishing reports - please come in and pick up your 2000 Year Book/Roster. The mailing expenses are exorbitant and we appreciate your help. The savings to the Club are substantial. In addition, you will note that many telephone numbers do not reflect the newer 858 area code. We have no idea just whose numbers have been changed unless YOU give us that information. If you are listed incorrectly a simple call to the Club should suffice in passing the correct information along. Thank you for your help. And if you aware of any errors, deletions, etc please let us know. And now - TOURNAMENT REPORTS:
SMALL BOAT TOURNAMENT (Sept. 16-17): With the Marlin vacating local waters attention was turned to the Tunas and 'Tails. The top winner was Skip Rolini with a 44 ½ pd. Tuna. Bob Woodard, Jr.came in second with a 25# YFT and Bob James scored with a 8# Yellowtail.
41ST ANNUAL GENE GRIMES MEMORIAL INVITATIONAL LIGHT TACKLE TOURNAMENT
(Sept. 22-23): The often spectacular fishing at San Clemente Island during preceding
tournaments was already on the wane when 11 boats participating in this year's tournament
made it out to "the only game in town."
Bob Woodard, Jr. released a bait fish off of a drop-back from the CHRISTINA
LYNN and Chip Langdon on MARLIN MAN released a jig fish. With a faster time the
"MARLIN (nee CULLIGAN) MAN" crew took 1st Place in the competition for the
second year in a row. Rumor has it that "ALFRESCO III" and "
President Dave Verdugo, tournament chairman, reports that, while the final figures are not in, and with a limited participation, the Club actually came out ahead in the Profit & Loss figures.
KONA KAI ANGLERS "MAKE-A-WISH" TUNA CHALLENGE (Sept. 30-Oct.1): Tuna, especially BigEye, numbers in local waters pushed the Marlin activity into the back-ground. BET's popped up at all of the local high spots (302-371-425 and even close to North Island). Fish hitting the 100+ mark were not too uncommon. The over-all winner was a 20 ft skiff with a man and woman with a double (118.7 and 107.8) on the BETS at 6:20 in the morning. Black and purple marlin lures, of course.
The lady angler proved to be the over-all top angler with the 118.7 points worth of BigEye. Greg Ny, fishing on Ed Waldman's SUNSHINE TOO finished 4th in the Small Boat division with 33.9 points (1/4 point per pound for a Marlin - see below).
In the Large Boat division 1st Place Team went to Bob Woodard's CHRISTINA LYNN with four nice Albacore (and a 95 mile fuel bill). Dave Verdugo was the 1st Place Angler (in the Large Boat division) with his 31.8 Albie. Bob Bossler was 2nd with 31.7 points, Steve Belt 3rd with 27 points worth of longfin, and skipper Bob Woodard 4th with 27.5 pounds/points. Final figures were not available at press time, but the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation came away with well over $20,000.
MARLIN FISHING: When last seen by the "hard core," the stripers were in the process of departing Northwest Harbor for the 277, "The Slide," Avalon Bank, Long Point, the Isthmus and parts beyond. As the month came to an end Catalina, the island of Romance, was the place to see the Marlin dance. Unfortunately, it doesn't look good for a "bye-bye" bite in local waters. Probably the rarest statement heard at the Club and on the "daily(actually p.r.n.)" Fish Report was: "We weighed-in a Marlin today." But all was not lost. The end of the month saw several sightings on the "9" and during the "Tuna Challenge" (the last day of the month) our very own Ed Waldman, ignoring the lure of the 302, fished his SUNSHINE TOO on the "9" and was rewarded with a double hook-up. Unfortunately, one was lost, but they brought in a 137#, taken by angler Greg Ny. Thus, it looks like October is starting off with at least a glimmer of hope for the remainder of the season.
Season Statistics through the end of September: 52 fish had been recorded. Of these, 30 were weighed-in (not all by members) and the members had reported 22 releases - led by Gary and Lynn Jaspers' WAIT-N-SEA with 7 and Steve Bledsoe's NO EXCUSES with 5. Worst year on record? So far - we have the booby prize (i.e.the "you should have been here in 1963" Award). 1962 saw 59 fish on the board and 1992 registered 64. (1963 saw 1,410 - yes, it was a very good year
