Saturday Fish Report   Steve Bledsoe    Date: 02 Sep 2001     Time: 18:36:55
We fished San Clemente Island yesterday for marlin. We found a small group of fish tight to the island between the Dome and the Windmills within 2-miles of the beach. The fish showed mainly as single tailers and an occasional quick feeder. Brooks Morris and Chris Benson both caught and released marlin yesterday on the "No Excuses". Brooks got bit on the drop-back on 30# and Chris pulled a 20# fish out of a bait ball. Dan Schumacher, Niall and Dave Devoy fished Dan's boat "Skipped Out". Dan caught and released his first SoCal marlin on 20# tackle. Dan and crew threw mackerel on a tailer and got bit. The Skipped Out crew also caught a 20-lb dorado and a 30-lb YFT from a paddy in that same area tight to the island. The water temp was 67 to 68 degrees, green and dirty from the Mackerel Bank in to the Island. The lee of the island is full of bait and yellowfin tuna. The seiners were working the tuna just a few miles inside Pyramid Head. Despite the large quantity of tuna in the area, there were very few tuna bites there yesterday. We found lots of 63 and 64 degree water between the two islands on our morning crossing.

Wednesday KENDAN Fish Report     Marty Morris      08/29/2001 11:40:12 PM
There are definitely fish up the coast towards San Onofre and downwards. Trent Huls got a couple and saw more, had bait bites on tailers, etc on Sunday. The water temp charts show the band of warm water along the coast - out to about 5 miles. We went yesterday. Problem was the southeast wind blowing in the AM (white caps in the channel), smooth running up hill, but continued blowing 12-15 out of the southeast all day. Never turned around to SW or W or NW. Saw two tailers going north (downswell) 4 1/2 to 5 miles straight out of oceanside harbor, and another 6 miles of domes. lots of bait and good bird signs from Carlsbad on up. Frequent huge meat ball marks on meter. San Clemente is now open, the bite at East End picked up, but can you imagine the scene there this week-end. If the weather improves you know where I - and most of San Diego - will be. And no problem making bait at Scripps Pier. As usual - good bite just before light. Water temp was 68.5 to 66.2 on the two sides of the break. Marty

Ensenada 8/24-8/26    Josh and Mike Burnam "REEL BRUIN"     27 Aug 2001   03:18:53
Ok, so here's the cliff notes: 8/24 and 8/25 targeted the ahis and went 5/8 in 68 degree water working from the Upper Finger down to the 238 on the 117.05 line. Could have done better, but just me (Josh) and my Dad (Mike) trolling four lines, and pinheads for bait to boot. Fish came on zuchini six-shooter, dorado pattern Bonita, and, for kicks, a Marlin Magic Baby Pear done up in zuchini colors of sorts. On 8/26, the best conditions of the weekend by far, great water, a million kelps, bait, and no fish at all from the Finger to the 425, but that seemed to be the story all around. Thanks for the help from those who emailed me, and to Dennis for passing my message around. Next outing - two weeks from now for marlin. P.S. You guys weren't kidding...the fuel dock really DOES run out of diesel on Saturday.

4 Marlin of the 267 Marty Morris      08/25/2001
I was there - 5 miles off LaJolla - they had a double at about 5 in the afternoon. I watched them boating the one fish. Rich Hamilton did tonight's Marlin Club fish report and told about his own boat's fish - 183 pounder weighed in at the Marllin Club. Ken Schilling and his "significant other" Pamela Macomber released three fish today. All four of these fish came from a small area about 3-4 miles southwest of the 267 (aka 279) spot some 49 miles from Pt. Loma. I was there too. I watched Kenny fighting the 2nd and 3rd fish (a double).

"F" words    Marty Morris      08/25/2001
It is just about time to say Farewell to this season's Fantastic Albacore Fishing. Looking back it is easy to use that single ("F") letter to summarize the activites. That is: Far Too much Filleting, too many new Found Friends,  and the Freezer is Full. Of course, we wouldn';t mind chasing a Few more of the Fin (blue and yellow) Fish, but, as Fate would have it they are now Few and Far between - as well as Far From Family. And, beside, Fuel is not Free. Being Fed up with this Foolishness - don't Fret - now that the First Weigh-ins have been Filed and Finalized - it is time to say Farewell to the (long) Fins. It has been Fun. Finally, is it not too Far Fetched to say: Time to go Farlin Fishing! (Farlin? Fooey on you For not letting me Fake a little Fun) Yes, there are lots more "F" words I may have used so Feel Free to Fill in. But don't Forget - THE "F"  word is Fully Forbidden. Marty Morris

Wednesday KENDAN Fish Report     Marty Morris      08/22/2001 11:40:12 PM
SHHHHH! Is the door locked? Is your computer secure? Do the walls have ears? Careful now - because - It's Tournament Time!!!! With this coming week-end we get started accumulating hot dope, secret fishing spots and all the other B.S. that goes with tournament fishing. This week-end kicks off with the Marlin Club Couples Tournament as well as the Rod & Reel "Big Fish" Tournament. So, for what it is worth (and, believe me - not much) here is our Wednesday report.

There was nothing spectacular about the state of current Albacore/tuna fishing, but son DANiel came down to spend the day with his brother KENneth and the old man on the family boat - "Ken-Dan." (Daughter Melody came later and made it only to the inflatable: "KenDanDy"). It was a day of male bonding - that is, lots of bonding and not too much fishing. No, lots of fishing -  not too much catching.

Reports were that there were still some relatively close Albacore in the 390 area with rfeports of fish - including good sized Tuna - out in the direction of the "Dumper" (i.e. the Dumping Ground). Not wanting to go the distance (>85 miles) we elected to go for the closer stuff. The night air was very - as in very cold and that didn't help the water any. The water temp was 66.5 as we passed North Island and remained 66.6-.9 almost the entire day. Unfortunately I mis-calculated and started the day perhaps 10 miles or more East of the 390. It was kind of sloppy out there in the early AM, but very fishable. Lots of larger birds, but very few of the small black "tuna" birds. We trolled around and around and finally got bit - a single jig strike about 7 1/2 miles East of the spot. 4 bait fish, one of which barely hit the 5 pd mark.Of the total of 4 fish we kept I doubt if they totalled 40 pds. We trolled around and slowly headed uphill in the slop. But we finally tired of it all and headed back to the North-East where there were reports of breaking Yellowfin up to 35 pds. As the day progressed the wind laid down, the ocean slowly settled and it turned into a very nice day. Behind us were reports of a couple of  small boats doing well 3-5 miles east of the 390 and 4-5 miles north of there. Using that ulltimate weapon - the retrospectoscope - we might have done better if we had made it out to the bank and hung out there, but the sport boats in the area were't doing much, they cried all day  someone got  excited with a double on skipjack) and the dock count today (124?) reflects the state of the inaction. Don't look for a"Big Fish" in that area.

But the Dumper stuff and parts beyond may be the answer. (One of the sport boats west of us did talk about "turning back on a Marlin" - they may have seen one or had a bite - but not that often the sporties talk about going Marlin Fishing.

In our travels we stopped on at least a dozen kelp paddys and managed to catch one (1) yellowtail. As for Marlin fishing locally - haven't heard a thing. The Terrafin Sea Surface Temps show a band of very warm water up and down the coast. So if that's what you are looking for - as you leave Point Loma - flip a coin - turn left or right - and hug the coast. Wish I could be more helpful Good luck out there this week-end and, no, don't look for Carolyn and me out at the dumper. Delmar, Oceanside, San Onofre? or will it be upper finger, Descanso, Salsespuedis? Somehow I don't think you'll find us visiting Steve Ross down on the Banda Bank. Fish where the fish are is good advice, but ------ where the f - - - are they? Marty

Marlin Release Board   Steve Bledsoe     8/21
Chris Benson has just created a Marlin Release board on our Tiburon Engineering web site. We invite all Southern California marlin anglers to post their marlin releases on the page. We're hoping the board will become a showcase for all of our pro-release friends in the Southland to display their accomplishments this marlin season. You don't have to be a member of a club or group to post a fish - all you have to do is catch and release a local marlin. Send us your info. Take a look at the board and send the info in by e-mail to the address on the Marlin Release page and Chris will get it up on display. Check it out - http://www.tiburoneng.com/html/marlin_releases.html

Wednesday KENDAN Fish Report     Marty Morris      08/15/2001 11:40:12 PM
On the week-end there were a handful of fish bites, caught, sightings, etc between "off Mission Bay" and La Jolla. Nothing on Monday. On Tuesday "Key to the sea" worked the "off LaJolla" area and saw a couple and may have had a couple of bites - especially on their teaser, but no cigars or flags. But they gave us the coveted "numbers."  With an early AM High Tide we ran up there. Also fishing in the area were the "Petty Cash" "Jigger Joe" (Lops) and Bill Woodard's "Fish 'n Fun."  Saw nothing at all except one jumper off La Jolla where there is tonnage of bait, mostly mackies with lots of birds, especially Terns, in the area. Huge meat balls on the meter. Temp was 71ish. Later in the morning I wandered down to the 178 where the temp dropped 1 1/2 degrees and no life or birds. So back to "off La Jolla" - for nothing. Everyone talked about late bite ("Gadget II" had two - got one broke off the other - after 5 PM on Sunday). The low tide slack was 12:45 - nothing happened and the next high was like 7:30. So - by 3:00 three of us were on the way in. (temp "off Ja Jolla" was 72) But Joe kept going to the 178 and to the "9." At about 3:30 we pulled into the slip and had Joe call that they were wired - 10 miles 245 degrees - top of the "9." We cleaned up went home, called Joe and were advised that they were on the way in with their 2nd fish. Shortly agter taking the first they were slowly workin down the "9" and edging towards the point when the same jig was bit and the hung one on the drop - back. They were going to release that one, but it looked large and moved the scale to 186 1/2 pds. P O'd??? No - plain old fashioned Pissed Off.!!!!! I don't know any other details of what they saw or what the water temp was - but looks like a small fleet out there for the afternoon bite tomorrow. Marty

Gadget III Sunday Fish Report   Dave Schlieder      08/13/2001 7:44:28 PM
Fished local San Diego waters on Sunday, the 12th, leaving the dock around 5:30. We almost plugged our tanks with Mackerel under the birds a few miles off La Jolla after trying to make bait at Scripps Pier where Alfressco III had luck. Shortly after, around 11:00, we had a zip. It didn't stick and we never saw the fish but it sure acted like a Marlin!

Worked the area from La Jolla to Mission Bay all day, probably never more than 5 or 6 miles off the coast. A number of other boats in the area had a number of strikes throughout the day and we were hopeful. Jigger Joe reported 6 strikes within a few minutes but none of them stuck! Alfressco III had a number of bites as well. Milsomar reported releasing a bait fish. A number of other boats in the area had bites as well.

About 7.89 miles out from Pt. Loma, on a 245 heading, about 5 PM, the rod with 30# and a Mean Joe Green went off! The clicker managed to turn itself off (anyone have any ideas on how to stop a Penn International from doing that?) so I assumed it was a quick zip and was dropping back a bait when I realized that the fish was still on and screaming out line! 30 minutes later we landed the fish. Phil Hoffman was the gaffer, my Dad the Captain! After getting things straightened out, we put in Phil's 2 lines and pointed it to the point. Five minutes later we had another bite. Because of the adrenaline rush we were on, and this fish was just going crazy jumping, we made a few errors, laid out too much line and didn’t leave ourselves enough to get the boat turned in time. Single screws on a slow boat don’t back up that well nor do they turn that easy! Marty Morris insured that the club would be open for us as we couldn’t arrive until 7:15. Fished weighed in at 123 lb. Thanks to Marty and the crew at the dock for waiting! So it looks like we might have some local fish this year!

Catalina Marlin report   Steve Bledsoe      Date: 08/12/2001 9:22:30 AM Pacific Daylight Time
Either the fish have moved from the East End area of Catalina or they were just not showing. We were 2-0-0 for yesterday on the "No Excuses". There were at least 30 to 40 boats working the triangle from Church Rock to the 152 to the Avalon Bank in the morning. As the day wore on, the number of boats was easily cut in half. There were only two fish caught in the area that I'm aware of. One was a jig fish caught near Church Rock and the other was a single tailer that bit for 10-year-old Zane Stotesbury - his first! Zane's fish was caught aboard his Dad's boat "Kawakawa" within a mile of the Avalon Bank numbers. There were several boats working that area east of the bank. We were there most of the day after visiting the 152 then our Wednesday numbers of 18/14 in the morning. In the Avalon Bank area, we had two jig bites within 10 minutes of one another at 20/13. That was around noon - well before the 3:00 afternoon tide. There were several other jig bites in the same area spaced out all through the day. None of them stuck. We suspect the fish were just bill-wacking the jigs and not actually biting them. Both of our bites were on "Mean Joe" D-8 Doornobs. We saw only one group of feeders, several jumpers and only one single tailer for the day. Our experience was similar to those of many other boat crews in the area. Most of the boats in the area saw a fish or two but there was no big show like the beginning of the week.

There is lots of scattered bait in the entire area and yesterday the water temperature on the ridge near the 152 was 66.5 degrees. The water near the Slide was warmer and pushing 69 degrees with the warmest area at the Avalon Bank at 70 to 71 degrees.

-"Secret radio channel marlin dope" Fish the Avalon Bank and inside that, another spot, 2 1/2 off Avalon, we had a couple of strikes there and a tailer on the same spot this morning, we've seen fish there every evening, also a bunch of stuff tight to the Slide, 8:47am

8/11-209, 14 Mile Bank   LayoverKing     Aug-11-01, 07:47 PM (PST)
Out of Al. Bay at 0500 with a great scoop of mixed from Nacho. Head south towards the 14 mile bank and nothing going on there. Get to the 209 about 0730 and stop 2 miles short on a bait boil. Friend chucks in a 'chovy and I throw a dine...a few minutes later he's hooked up and it's pulling lots of line! I bring my 'dine in to help and we end up "chasing" his fish for 10 minutes with the boat until !POW!! out of the water comes a beautiful 90-100 lb striped marlin and it tosses his hook...Farmed but it was still a sight to see.
Trolled around the 209 with rapalas, cedar plug and feather for nothing, found a HUGE paddy about 7 miles west of the 209 in about 67 degree water and we pulled 2 YT off it until LAURA J (commercial) comes and parks right on the paddy and shuts the bite off. Man I was pissed off, they basically just pushed us away. Well there was another paddy 1/4 mile north so we head there and pull 3 more YT off that one.
PB'er Dominion pulls up later and asks very nicely over the radio if he could join us...we tell him sure, we're out of bait anyway, come on in. He offers a nice scoop of dines..What a guy!! Who said chivalry was dead? Anyway, nothing more and we head home stopping on one more huge paddy 8 miles south of the 14 mile bank for nada.   Great day, good fishing! The marlin was hilarious, we thought it was a shark until it jumped. And finding nice people on the water to boot!  Final score, 5 tails, 2 farmed and the farmed marlin of course! 93 miles and 29 gallons.  Sushi time!!   Chris

11 Aug. Marlin on the slide       Russ Long      Aug-11-01, 06:55 PM (PDT)
Left Newport at midnight, made bait (macks and dines)and headed for the 277. Got to the 277 to find 64.8 degree water and a pretty good chop. Tucked up in the lee by the slide and put the jig in 69.8 degree water at 5:30am. After six passes in front of Avalon, we headed in tight to the slide. Got a blind jig strike on a purple/black sevenstrand clone and in 25 minutes we tagged and released a 120 - 125 lb marlin for Wes Schonlaw (14 YEARS OLD! His 1st).   Spent the rest of the a.m. in close to the island with only a couple of jumpers sighted. Slid back out over the 152 and 14 mile bank to see nothing but colder water and no signs.   The boat was the Agua Mar and it was great getting a chance to go back and help catch a fish for the grandson of the person who helped me cut my teeth on the water 30 years ago.   The lesson learned is that you can never be too close to the beach next to the slide. A great start to the season. Now back to my boat for it's 1st of the year.   Tight lines to all and good luck on Sunday getting through the fleet.  Russ Long   Conquest

Wednesday KENDAN Fish Report     Marty Morris      08/08/2001 11:40:12 PM
Are you done with dinner? Feet up? Cold beer in hand? Lit up your favorite pipe? It is time to sit back and relax for it is time for the infamous "Ken-Dan" Wednesday Report. The week started with the news of crappy weather, but Tuesday night the westher channel brought forecasts of nicer weather and fishing reports of the weather "lying down." (or is it "laying down"?) In addition, there were the reports of the 100 pd+ BFTs "as close as" 105 miles. Did we chase those brutes? Nope! There were also reports of the Butterfly bite moving further west past the West End of Clemente - only about 90+ miles away. Did we go West? Nope! And there was a call from a very reliable source (S.B.) that "lots" of sleepers were being seen between the Slide and the 152 as well as down on the 277 with lots of tailers in the PM. The Jaspers had released one near the 152 on their (not Tommy's or Shano's) boat, "Wait-N-Sea." Obviously, this was the place to go. So did we go Northwest ("only" 65 miles +/-)? Nope!

The report that sounded best was that there had been scattered larger Albacore catches and large Yellowtail under the paddys outside of the 371 and 390 areas. There were only 3 of us (Dr. Ken, Geoff Halpern and I). We voted and unanimously decided to sleep til 0300 and have an easy day. We did just that. The weather laid down and was virtually flat all day. Temp was 65.3-.8 in the area described. Southwest of the 371 enroute to the 390 there lots of little black birds, we found one small batch of "peanut" (8-10 pds) albies -3 - and 1- 22 pounder. About 1 out of four kelp paddys produced and we finished with 12 "keepers" (12-22 pounds) and released one. And 1 more 15 pd longfin from under the kelp. This gave us a wonderful opportunity to get home early.

The water was a beautiful blue and found 70 degree water at the bottom of the "9" but no life there - no birds, bait, porpoise, fish, etc. Later, we heard that our "informant" - S.B. on his boat "No Excuses"  hung and released one of the tailers off the East End. We also heard that there was lots of bait - a rare commodity down here - at Catalina. Sounds like Albacore fishing is not just on the wan, but on the way out. Time to go after the stripers, but, jeez - it's a long way to the Slide. Of course, the rationality is the old stand-by: "It's down-hill all the way home."

The story of the day was Steve Lasley telling of nailing a two-finner, having it take off with all the gear and being located 44 hours later some 34 miles from the spot. It was found by the "Bongos" who pulled the fish only to have the dart pull with the fish 8' from the surface - all purple - and promptly swam off as if nothing had happened. Lasley also reported tagging three swordies with fancy satellite tracking sophisticated tags all of which broke off because of some defective pin and disappeared.

"THE Beak" postulated that this may be why a large number of fish tagged with some of these sophisticated things at Mag Bay last year gave a false impression of an excessive number of fish ( was it over 25%?) not surviving the release procedure.

Oh well - nothing wrong with White's Landing. M

NO EXCUSES Fish Report       Steve Bledsoe       08/08/2001 10:57:43 PM
Lots of marlin Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday between the 277 and the East End of Catalina. Lynn Jasper on Wait-N-Sea released a fish Tuesday afternoon. Lynn’s fish was a bait-fish on 30# that we believe will stand for the First Marlin of the Season for the Dana Angling Club. Skipper Tom Shanahan reported seeing lots of fish over the two days. My crew and I on the No Excuses found the fish this morning between the Slide and the 152 Spot (thank you Lynn, Gary and Tom Shanahan for pointing us in the right direction!). We baited at least 30 tailers there today and got one to bite, Bob Cravens released the tail-wrapped fish after a 1½ hour struggle. The fish was revived and released in good condition. Our guest from Chicago, Rich Barnas, is now hooked on marlin fishing. We have him believing that all you have to do is get out there on the water and bait several dozen fish every day – piece-of-cake! He’ll never be the same again! We baited a swordie this morning off Dana Point that actually picked up our popsicle but gave half of it back – the half with the hooks in it!

Labor Day Weekend...      Dave Schlieder     08/08/2001 6:48:16 PM

Cc:    Stan@marlinnut.com, dalbert911@aol.com, cschliedern6dom@juno.com (Carl "Pop" Schlieder)

I'll ask the same question I asked the webmaster at SCISLAND.ORG whose comments were "None".

"Okay, now that I understand that 0-10K will restrict surface vessels, why in the world is this area hot over Labor Day weekend? I'm sure that there are scores if not hundreds of boaters planning on boating, fishing and anchoring in and around this area during that time. The last 3-day weekend of the summer, just before school starts... I'm sure you guys are going to have your hands full trying to keep the area clear of all these boaters! No other weekend is this restricted within a weeks either side of Labor Day Weekend. Don't both the civilians on this island as well as the military observe this National holiday?"

I now see that the schedule has changed somewhat for what it originally was in that the east end is now only closed during Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 0800 till 2200 each day instead of all night as well. And it is open on Monday now. But opening it up at night does little to support the local boating community as few people would want to approach an anchorage in either Pyramid or Fishhook at that late hour. And opening it on Monday does little as well. For those that have boats that only travel in the 7-8 knot range, it is an almost all day affair to get to and then another day to return from the island. So one day doesn't help much.

Please do not think that I am some anti-military activist. I am a veteran of the Navy (Viet Nam) and support our military. But I believe that it was a mistake to close down such a popular boating recreational area on a 3 day weekend in the middle of summer when I am sure historically there are always a large number of boaters in the area. The expense and problems that you are undoubtedly going to face in trying to keep the area clear on this weekend could have been easily avoided. And you will probably have to postpone or delay any exercises as you attempt to keep this area clear. This almost falls into an area of government waste of time and money if in fact your exercises become fouled and you have to re-schedule them.

I will not be one of those as I am painfully aware of this closure. Painfully as this is the one fishing weekend I work for and look forward to all year. Yes I fish other weekends and other holidays. But this weekend has always been the best fishing weekends we have had. And I may not even be interested in fishing around San Clemente that weekend as I do not know where the fish will be. That decision might possibly be made only the day before we will be leaving San Diego. And if the fish aren't around San Clemente, then maybe all of this is a mute point for me. But there are others who dive, sail, fish, kayak and otherwise would like to enjoy this area that may not have another alternative as nice as SCI.

Respectfully,  Dave Schlieder

P.S. My posts on SCISLAND.ORG probably referenced my work e-mail address of d.schlieder@fmc-na.com. Regardless, I have never received any e-mails from the webmaster there to either of my e-mail addresses. I am not doubting that he/she may have replied as my office e-mail service may have been down or it may be possible the my corporate office is filtering incoming mail or some other reason for it not being delivered.

Pyramid     Dave Schlieder    08/08/2001 7:36:48 AM
We HAVE made a difference!  The schedule has changed, but not enough. The http://www.scisland.org  site has new schedules posted!  Instead of keeping the east end closed from 8:00 8/31 through 22:00 9/3 the current schedule has it closed 8:00-22:00 on 8/31, 9/1 and 9/2 and open all day on 9/3. So it is open at night on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and open all day Monday. Not that this does us a lot of good. If you can't enter the area till 22:00 you probably won't make the anchorage till 23:00 and not a lot of people will do that. Maybe if we keep the pressure on...

San Clemente Island Closure over Labor Day  Dave Schlieder - Gadget III   8/1/01
I've been trying for weeks to get clarification from the webmaster at www.scisland.org about closure information at San Clemente Island over Labor Day weekend and finally got an answer. Pyramid is closed from 8/32 to 9/3! The whole weekend plus Friday.   http://www.scisland.org/schedules/usage/usage.php

I wanted to get this info to you ASAP so I am sending this from the office in case you wanted to relay this data to the rest of the members and/or try to persuade the navy to reschedule whatever they have happening that weekend.    Dave Schlieder - Gadget III

8/3/01 - Marty Morris called the official Clemente Security offfice this AM and confirmed the information sent to us by Dave Schlieder. Pyramid is scheduled to be closed at 0800 on Friday 31 August until 2200 (10 PM) on Monday 3 Sept. This is no rumor. They gave me the web site for the Range Control which lists their address and telephone number. www.score.net

Marlin Club Wednesday Fish Report   Marty Morris    8/1/01   9:02pm
Last week we opted to go south. A good decision! Last night we opted to go south - bad decision! This Monday and Tuesday the weather out west towards the Butterfly was reported to be very bad and the bite was way down on Tuesday (probably a combination of the weather, bad bait, moon?, etc) And there were reports of large BFT down towards the Inner Bank. So we headed South - even though Bob Vanian had an onsite report of scratchy fishing towards the 220/220 and 1010 trench.
On the way I kept waiting for the inevitable crashes and bouncing, but they never came. The ride down was very comfortable and weather during the day even nicer. They are predicting "glass" for tomorrow. Once in the area of the Inner Bank we piled up a 12 fish count. We didn't want a lot of fish - just enough for dinners - and the freezer is full. And we looked for the big BFTs - to no avail.
So we worked to the east looking for the warmer water and - who knows what. We picked up a single albie on the way, but found very dirty cold water at the Banda Bank. So we headed north with thought of Marlin trolling at the upper finger, but finally just kept going and settled with the Baker's Dozen. From what we heard - unless their afternoon bite picked up - the other boats in the area did a lot worse than us with very little going on down there. If there are more fish down below and they decide to swing way out the season for us may be drawing to a close. And our fish were smallish in the 15-18 pd. range.
And, of course, upon our return we learned of the excellent fishing today at the Butterfly - and nice weather, of course. The weather should be great the next few days with a "high" settling in and if its numbers - and decent sized fish - you are looking for - Go West, Young Man!    Marty

Wednesday Fish Report  Dennis Albert 8/2/01
I hooked up with Dennis on the Aluminator, Cory Vassec and Mark. The 976-bite report wasn't updated by the time we left the bait receiver, so I called Bob on the marine radio, which he immediately responded to and he told us about the rough weather, suggesting that we head towards the 302 and Butterfly. We opted for the 1010 in search of the Bluefin and bigger fish. The water was about 65.4 degrees all the way down and it wasn't til we got to the 1010 that it dropped to 64.9We were fishing in the same general area as Marty Morris, but more towards the 1010. We picked up 6 Albacore, two were the 31 pound variety and four yellowtail, the biggest 21 pounds. We fished several paddies for nothing. We passed up one dead seal, then later saw another one. We picked up a yellowtail on the troll under the second one, so I guess we should have fished the first one. Weather was great, so you never really know what tomorrow is going to be like.

First marlin of year a long time coming
By Ed Zieralski
SD UNION TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER    July 31, 2001
Nothing like a big fish to break in a new boat.

Ed Waldman will always remember the first whopper to hit the deck of his sparkling new boat, the Moonshine Too.

Waldman checked into Point Loma just before dusk last night with the first marlin of the season for a San Diego Marlin Club member. Waldman weighed in a 119.5-pound striped marlin he caught at the Rockpile, below the Coronado Islands, 24.5 miles off Point Loma on a 158-degree heading.

The San Diegan not only caught the fish, but also gaffed it while his skipper, Garven Herring stayed at the wheel of the Moonshine Too, a custom 29-foot Blackman built locally by Don Blackman.

"I'm 73, and Garven is 82; yes, we're an experienced crew," Waldman said.

The marlin hit a Zuker's Mean Joe Green lure on 20-pound test line, and Waldman had it to the boat in a quick 25 minutes.

Waldman's old boat was the Sunshine Too, but he switched to Moonshine Too for a reason. His construction material business is Sunshine Supply, and all his previous three boats, all named Sunshine Too, were tan in color. But this boat is gray, thus Moonshine Too.

A Marlin Club member since 1978, Waldman said this is the first time he weighed in the club's first marlin of the season. "I've tried many, many times before," Waldman said.

Dave Verdugo, back for his third year as president of the Marlin Club, said Waldman's marlin is the fourth caught in Southern California waters this summer. Two others were caught and released, including one on the Dawn Patrol by San Diegan Kirk Mitchell last Thursday, and another was kept and weighed in at Avalon. None of those fish was caught by Marlin Club members.

Also, Capt. Rich Hamilton steered the Mil-So-Mar to a fine catch last week. Hamilton took turns with anglers Dick Rooney and Kevin Bohannon on a swordfish that weighed in at the Marlin Club at 351 pounds. Verdugo said the Mil-So-Mar was six miles east of Pyramid Head off San Clemente Island.

7/29- Girls Spotty-Butt Tourney  entropyGain    Allcoast    Jul-29-01, 07:25 PM (PST)
Great Day.   Took my daughter, Michelle (age 11) and her two friends, Courtney & Erin for a day in the bay. Launched around 11:30 at shelter Island, then went to the bait barge to watch them load their catch into the pens. Picked up a nice ½ scoop of 90%-5" chovies, and a few dines.  Each girl gets a turn driving and they do great. Thanks to the kind folks who answered their radio checks and fish reports politely!

Off to the secret spotted bass spot and first two drifts hook a few nice ones, so set the anchor. Serious spotties, every few minutes for the next couple hours. All fish legal. Mixed in short halibut. Courtney becomes the halibut princess, because every drop she brings up a short. Erin becomes the bass queen, because she catches the biggest spotties and then a nice 18" juvenile white sea bass. After a while, the bass slow down and we get a lot of short strikes which look like halibut. I tell Michelle to let them take it for a good 10 count before setting the hook.

Now, taking three young girls is a serious commitment to being the ultimate deck hand. I’m baiting Erin’s hook when it gets quiet on the other side of the boat…..

Daddy…., DADDY, DADDEEEEEEE!!!! --- I look over my shoulder and Michelle is pinned against the rail. The fish is stripping line. She finally get’s control and we work on pumping it up. She gets walked around the boat a couple times and we finally get color. - Huge halibut. At least 36". Finally, get it up to the side and release it. Very nice fish. Michelle’s pooped and sits out fishing a while to recover after being crowned Halibut Queen. Great job!

Pick up another legal and a couple more shorts, then move for a few more bass and short bite halibut. All fish released in good health.

Great day on the water. As good as any wide open Albie bite. Watching them get so excited was wonderful. Now if I can just get them to bait their own hooks…..

Tight lines!
Scott
