ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:   Date: Mon, 31 Jul 2000 07:40:43 -0700
Sunday albies - Launched at shelter sunday 3am and got bait, had to beg for the choves and it is a good thing we did. Headed for the 60 mi bank at a 215 or so. It was a real bumpy ride. Well at about the 42mi mark water broke reall nice from 67.5 down to 65 and put in the jigs and at 7am triple jig strike and since there were only two of us we got only two. Good pick all the way out to about 5 mi short of the bank. We heard of some fish behind us so we turn around and headed back. Had a dry spell from 8:30a to 10:30am and decided to put on bright jigs even though it was still very cloudy, this turned out to be a wise choice as we stopped the boat between 10:45 and 11:00am for two stops one with wfo bait fish. Had limits pulled the jigs and headed for loma. Only two paddies all the way back for nada except for dodo charging the boat just to nose on the bait with no biters. Total for the day 10 albies one above 30 the rest at 18-25 lbs. Long way to go but lots of fish in that area. Caught your radio show as we were pulling on tuna what a deal. Thanks for the great site. Gerry aka kammel driver

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line  MDR before gray light on Saturday, picked up some mackerel, and headed to the 14, where we put out the jigs--water was nice 71.2 but lifeless on the 14, and it warmed up as we headed toward the 277. We found a band of 72+ water, then back around to the 14 via a big southeast loop, back down to the 277 area and up to Whites via the slide for the night. We saw a few Mako about 8 miles north of the 277, as well one jumper, and finally one tailer about 3 southeast of the slide on the very lumpy ride up the line to White's, but he was trucking anad we couldn't get in position to bait him. Sunday, down to the slide, to the 277 area, over to the 14 and up the line--no marlin. We did find a paddy loaded with very nice Dorado but absolutely could not get them to go and we tried for an hour--threw everything we had (which did not include sardines or anchovies) from frisky mackerel to fresh dead, to every lure I could think of--they'd take a look and simply keep circling the boat--lots of fun but no fresh fish dinner last night. Still, beats work.

Sundays Report, thousands of albacore were reported landed yesterday from the San Diego fleet, today the average dropped to 20 to 50 fish per boat. Prime area was near the 390 Fathom Spot or approximately 45 miles at 210 degrees from SD. Big Yellowtail found closer to the beach. The cooler water on the outside and warmer water on the inside. Big numbers of albacore in the waters further south as well as some big Bluefin. The marlin bite was somewhat quite yesterday with only a few hookups or sightings. Reported one marlin caught off Oceanside, no details yet. Another marlin lost 2 miles off Long Point this morning same boat lost another fish off the 14, Feeders were seen off Church Rock this afternoon and a another good looking area was between 152 and Avalon Bank. MJG (black & green) leads the list of marlin colored lures working!  A P-nut lure, (small collector lure) pink or green took a fish (do-do) . And a 107 lb Marlin was weighed by the Balboa Angling Club, the fish was taken off a MJG Marlin lure, another fish was hooked on an/ MJG.

"Alba at the "cross"  Fished Sat. out of S.D. aboard Bud Robbin's 300-Yanmar- powered, custom 27' Whaler "Knot too Shabby", 3 scoops of sorry 'dines from Ev. Bros and off at 0300 for the 32/118 "Cross" (thanks to Bob Hoose for the late dope). Ran 50-plus miles on a 215deg. heading thru sloppy conditions to the area, arrived 0630. 65.4deg water, purple-blue color and plenty of marks on the sonar, had a triple after 1/2 hour on the troll- one on the new sardine color CD14 all the others on 7-Strands hex jigs in purp/blk and loco joe, also one bait fish on this stop. My dad, Ross, got bit letting the first jig out after the triple and this stop turned into a 10 fish ripper on the bait, including 4 bait fish for my son Zane (9yrs old) on 'dines with a 1oz chrome torpedo and 20lb Fluoro leader. Many more jig fish and bait fish over the next 2 hours including Bud Jr's. first alba ever (6 yrs old). Full limits for us by 0930 of nicer 20-25lb fish and never had to troll out of the area. No BFT or exotics (shoulda' anchored and fished chunks on the Tanner..), but still a great trip....Later-Kawakawa

Saturday, July 30, 2000. Starting trolling at first light 1 mile south of the 279 on a heading to the 14 mile bank. The water was a shade off, 70.3 degrees, and FAC. The area was loaded with bait and we tossed a live mackeral to a feeder with negative results. The single marlin was just outside a school of feeding porpoise. Lost a couple purple/black 3.5 Zukers to the makos. One came unbuttoned and in a fit of anger from the hook sting put on a 10.0 aerial performance. The makos observed feeding were all juveniles. It makes me sad that these juveniles are being targeted by sportfisherman. I would think it would be more appropriate to set up a chum slick and pick an adult mako to bait. In the early afternoon the 279 rolled and the water temperature dropped a couple degrees. We could not believe the difference.

Sat. July 29 Fished from "Fad B" to Dolly Parton, water colder on "Dolly" (69),worked inside then down toward La Jolla. No kelps, no birds, no bait. JIGGER JOE, Joe Lops, caught a 28.5 lb dorado outside 18 miles on the troll, open ocean, and later (10+/-) baited a two-finner within sight of the weather buoy. At about 11am Troy Grant on 50-50 had a feeder pop up in front of him about 1.5 mi. north of the weather buoy. At about 11:30 I had a tailer come up right in front of the boat (20 feet) about 100 yards north of the weather buoy. No biters, but all in all, not a bad day for the first marlin trip of  the year, and in July yet.

Saturdays Report: Without the satellite images these past few days due to the coastal marine layer it's been hard to get the overall idea of what's happening out there , water temp wise. Direct VHF radio reports are helpful and give a brief description of a strong current/ temp break inside the 14 Mile bank and towards the east towards Dana Point. That current line his holding lots of baitfish (sardines) and with it the bigger fish, Makos and Blue sharks, a few marlin and even a dorado or two. Three feeders popped up 4 miles due East of the 14 Mile Bank at 1:30 this afternoon, a small boat on it slowed down and stopped to cast baits, the marlin hit his sinking jigs! Lost. The dorado bite was good down south off Oceanside/ Domes, Good kelps on the 43 holding big Yellowtail, 30lb pounders. the kind that really kick your butt", the only real warm water is against the beach. All the tails are on the albacore grounds. We found most of our action east of 43 where it was. 67 1/2 degrees. The waters "albacore blue" everywhere, we came in from the 209 to the 267 where it went from 67 degrees to 69.2 in a 1/2 mile. The hot zone is against the beaches , there was a marlin baited less than 2 miles off Newport yesterday.

MARLIN - Chet Spreen/ BITE ME  Date: 30 Jul 2000 22:38:22
Friday/Saturday Report..Trip started Friday morning at the Marina Coral where are 90 day hiatus was over and we were clear to sail north. Our intention was to find a hungry marlin or some hungry dorado. We worked up the lower finger to the 425, 5 miles off the Coronados to the upper 9 for nothing! The paddies were all dry if we could find one and we strained hard for any resemblance of a marlin. We continued on staying 4 to 8 miles off till we got to the domes off San Onofre where we turned towards Dana Point. Still no marlin or dorado, but a ton of makos everywhere. FINALLY at 4 miles off San Clemente Pier a SLEEPER, we positioned ourselves perfectly and the cast was on the money, but the marlin put up it's bill to our bait and swam away.

Saturday we worked the inside zone 2 to 7 miles off Dana on up to Newport. We saw a ton of makos again, lots of breezing bait balls, feeding porpoise, and a thousand skiffs zooming around like flys. We worked this inside area hard for no marlin sightings. We then worked out to the 279 and up to the 14 and then back to an area off Main Beach. There was a ton of good signs on the inside area and not much life at the 14 although fish were seen there. Will get them next trip.

Other reports- Pescador baited some more swords in the same area he caught his fish on Thursday. Lots of dorado were reported near Catalina Island and inside the 181 under the paddies. Marlin were baited off the domes 7 miles, 9 miles off Dana Point, 2 miles off Newport, 1.5 miles inside the Avalon Bank, 1 mile off the Can Dump, 7 miles southeast of the Slide, feeder seen just outside Church Rock, 3 feeders baited near the La Jolla weather buoy, I also heard 2 marlin were hooked up by unsuspecting anglers fishing paddies one near the 152 and one near the 289.  Go Get 'em, Chet

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line Stan Jul-30-00, 09:26 PM (PDT)
"Marlin Attempts - Fri / Sat"  Broke away from the keyboard long enough to get in two days of marlin fishing on HOOKER. Stocked up with bait and headed out to the only real data point we had - Gary Jasper's marlin catch off the Slide. Very few boats out, which seemed strange even for a Friday. There were two swordfish boats and spotter planes working the area as well as ESPADON, which was encouraging. Spotted one finning marlin and tossed him a mackeral with no success, then found another while soaking and missed him as well . Saturday heard a lot of boats down off Dana, with a few more on the 14. Everyone seemed to be seeing a marlin or two, but no one was getting bites. I think they all still have lockjaw, but should loosen up soon. We saw one more marlin on Saturday working near the Avalon Bank, but got the same results as before. All in all, getting three chances on the first weekend of the season is a nice change from last year, and bodes well for the season.

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishing  - Jeff - Holi_e_Mackeral on Jul-30-00 at 01:55 PM (PST)
"Albie limits on SAT." - Fished on the 26" Parker Paddie wagon with captain Alan.. Baited up with weak sardines from the SD reciever and headed towards the 60 mile bank through mod rough seas. It looked like the 405 fwy at rush hour out there. The entire party boat fleet had the same idea. At sunrise was able to pick up 8 tuna mostly on cedar plugs and blk/purple six shooters with 2 on bait. We had a couple of quad hookups as well as some double. We lost more fish than I would admit to... Began working back uphill and at 1:00 at 45 miles (32 degree to the point) started getting some meter marks. Also saw another boat hooked up. We soaked some baits and caught a single bait fish... Began trolling and for the next 90 minutes it was WFO on the albies. We would get a double and a couple of bait fish.. Clean the deck, Put the lines out and drive 100 yards to repeat the process. I think a party boat could have put a couple of hundred fish on the deck at this spot.. We all agreed that the carnage should end for us and we left the fish biting and powered home....  A truley fun day.....

Along the lee of Clemente and East of the head for the next slack-ooo. 1500--pick up and run to the 138 an on to the 178--good glassing conditions--000. It's early.

SWORDFISH - Southern California Marlin On-line Jim Elliott - Jul-29-00, 10:56 PM (PDT)
"No-go Swordfish"   Baited a swordfish this AM at 33-16/118-01 but couldn't get him to go. Got him interested enough to light up a couple of times... he even jumped clear out of the water once. But after 15 minutes of trying, a maco showed and ate the mackerel instead. I know they are extremely tough to get into a biting mood, but are there any special tricks to make the right presentation?

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:   Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 01:19:14 PDT
Started from Mission Bay 530 AM with intentions of starting at the 182 paddy hopping up the ridge to the 209 then back across Encinitas/Del Mar for afternoon tailers. Three Dry paddies from 2 miles east to five miles west of 182. Radio chatter told of albacore inside the Butterfly so we made the 18 mile run to 32.26 118.00 where Tanqueray called us in as he just landed a double. Fish metered but no biters for the first hour (9:30-10:30) while Tanqueray took six fish. Triple got us started at 32.22 118.01 and it was doubles and triples for the next two hours with 3 baitfish on one stop and two on another. Unfortunately the talent managed to release two rapalas and two sevenstrand miniclones with the albies still attached. While undoing a rapala cluster while the two feather rods were being fought I managed to watch a three foot mako swim off with one of the purple CD-11's when I was gaffing a tuna off the side of the boat. Enough fun for one day for my three first timers, a little rough out there but worth the effort. Good talent will get you home early! Saw nine sporties in the area.

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:   Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 16:06:16 PDT
Hi Dennis, Left Thursday evening to try some sword fishing, but had no luck finding mackerel outside the jetty. So we decided to head towards the 302 in hopes of finding them on the way or somewhere on the 302. Found nothing on the way or out there, no meter marks of anything after hours of looking. Also, my partner was sick from all the rockin', so he fell asleep. So, here I was, at 1:00 am, somewhere between the 302 and the 371, with no bait, falling asleep, and cattle boats cruising by, I needed to think of something quick. After an hour of watching boats go by, I decided to plug in the numbers of "tuna town" aka the Butterfly Bank for the early am bite. The first ten miles were dry, but after that the wind really picked up, giving us a nice salt bath. We started trolling about 14 miles before the bank at dawn, at the lowest temp reading so far - 66.2 degrees. 5 minutes later, we had double....then a double....then a double-losing one....then a single....then a triple....then a single(got hit as soon as I let the first line out.) That was 10, so we were done at 7:00am heading towards the Mission Bay Jetty in search of paddies. The numbers for this area are: 32-24.373 118-02.041 We trolled the cooler side of a 1/2 degree break between the butterfly and Mission Bay, with the cooler side to the west. Albacore hit the green/black and purple/black jet heads on the riggers, and my newly home made hoochie daisy chains-all the colors got hit - pink, blue, bleeding mackerel, purple, black, green, yellow. They love those daisy chains. Tried dropping back iron jigs and fish traps on each slide, but the schools never came up. It's a long ride out there, but the butterfly seems to always come through. Only saw one small paddy on the way home, with the warmest waters just a couple miles offshore. Hope this helps, Derek on the Affordable 1

DORADO - Affordable Marine Date: Sat, 29 Jul 2000 02:19:14 PDT
Dennis, we left Dana Point at about 5:30 to catch the gray light and look for paddys. We were about 3 miles off of Oceanside and small Bonito were jumping all over our trolling rigs so we moved off about 2 miles. SMART MOVE. We found a paddy loaded with about 100 dodos. We pulled up and we immediatly hooked up on a 10lb dodo. The fish were really picky as they were feeding on the Sauries but if you had a really hot bait, you would get bit. We picked up one more on a purple and black tady lure trolled through a huge boil. The fish just wouldn't go, so we marked the paddy and started running to the 267~~~~~~~~~. 3 miles short of the 267 we found a school of about 20 fish just breezing and managed to catch an 18lber. We trolled through the area but couldn't another bite. We decided to head back towards the paddy and check to see if the dodo's would bite a little better. After a little searching we found the paddy, and the huge school of dodo's and put 2 more in the box. All the fish went about 10lbs plus the 18lber. We were back in the dock by lunchtime. What a great day's fishing. Dave and Niall on the "Happy Hooker"

ALBACORE -  Marty Morris -   07/28/2000 11:07:01 PM
Friday fishing - Not really a glutton for punishment, but wedding in the family this week-end, lots of out of town guests, and took cousin from Florida out to see what it is all about. Weather was a little sloppy going out, but tolerable. The entire fleet shut down at about 45 miles (about 15 up and 57 out - just inside the trench to the East of the 60). Since I had to get back early I told them it wasn't going to be a long day. It wasn't - for us. Got a triple at 0550 and had 13 fish by 0830 - about 3 or four bait fish - only on the 'dines. Got my cousin a couple of jig fish and one on bait. He's smiling, but never saw one of the other passengers til we hit the "whistler."
The seas were 4-6 foot swells with some wind, but not rolling over and very fishable, tho somewhat uncomfortable. It sounded like for all the boats that were out (31?) and over 500 anglers, the fishing was only fair and the fleet really spread out. But there was one yacht who did extremely well on both albies and Bluefin in that area between the 390 and 371. It sounded like this was a different group from that that has been worked up East of the 60.
Since I troll nothing but black and purple jigs all of our bites came on Black and Purple jigs. Coincidence? With two of the Zukers (B&P with lime green head) and two of the 7 - Strand Tuna clones, both the Zuker size and the mini-clones, Mr. Hoose should be glad to hear that the clones out fished the Zukers - not quite statistically significant, but on this day, anyway.
So 13 fish - all "keepers" - by 0830. Not too shabby. And then, for frosting, at 12 miles 230 from the point, just outside the bottom of the "9" a tailer popped up, but sank out before we could get a sardine in his direction. One of the other MC ( he'll say "Southwestern") boats saw one up off LaJolla. Water temp 70 degrees on the "9." Marty

ALBACORE - Dennis Albert - July 27, 2000 9:56 PM
Fished Thursday on the Dolphin II out of Islandia, 50+miles SW of MB. @ 32.08/117.58 to 32.12.260/117.54.90. in 65 degree water. Seas were calm. Most of the party boat fleet was there, very few private boaters. We had 19 anglers, who got 32 fish (ofishal reort). I got my limit of 5, 2 troll, 1 bait, 1 blue/chrome iron and 1 Channel Island Chovey Fish Trap. Bait fish was on an anchovy and 15lb test. Bait was poor, since we had to replace a starter the night before and were the last ones to leave the landing at 1:30am. Very few anchovies and the Sardines were weak. In spite of the starter problem, we got to the grounds at gray light, and the usual black./purple and green/black got the morning troll fish. Tight Lines, Dennis Albert

ALBACORE -  Rich Johnson - MARIE-B  -  Date: 27 Jul 2000 - 06:27:25
July 25 Decided to check out all that warm water up the coast. Traveled about 5-7 miles offshore past Oceanside. The warmer it got, the greener the water. Little life and most of the kelps dry. Out toward the 209 and back down about 15 miles off. A down day although I think there is a good SW fin up there somewhere. Nine still looked the best. Lots of makos inside off the Encinitas power plant. Scattered dorado under the kelps. Lots of skiff competition. July 26, that report by Rich Hamilton on the Marlin Club phone line sent me down to check out the lower Nine in the morning. Great life at the usual spots--shearwaters and fishing porpoise--pulled a nice dorado off a kelp-water blue and 68. Came home at noon. The albacore sounded good inside the 60.

ALBACORE -  Marty Morris -   07/26/2000 8:51:37 PM
Last night's marine weather report called for Small Craft warnings on the outside and"iffy" on the inside. But we ventured out. Four of us - Harry Okuda, a friend from up north, myself and another friend with no fishing experience. Going out was a little sloppy, but no white caps. We headed for the area just south-east of the "60." Most of the fleet also headed there and wound up at the 0/0 cross where an outstanding bite developed. I think the fleet produced a 5/1 ratio. We started a few miles above this spot (50 miles from PL) and did well. We worked down, never reached the fleet and had another good bite. Things were very dry from 0900 to about 1030. By 1100 our fish bags were full and couldn't hold any more. We wound up with over 30 (closer to 35) for the day and headed home. No pop corn and by 10-11 the seas were settled down instead of picking up. By the time we were half way back the ocean was flat. Good weather for the rest of the week?  We had exceptional chovie bait, the kind of which I haven't seen for years. That helped, but they were biting the 'dines as well. Lots of baitfish for the day. Trips with "first timers" can be kind of taxing. Marlin: please start biting with a little more frequency so I stop chasing long fins (instead of two fins). Marty

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line Stan  -  July 24
If you haven't been by the site, you might not have heard that Gary Jasper took the first marlin flag for the Balboa Angling Club yesterday. The fish was taken 6 miles 60 degrees off the Slide at Catalina. The fight took 1 hr, 14 min and the fish weighed in at 186lbs. We now have pics of the two swordfish mentioned below posted in La Galeria at SCMO.

As we had indicated last week, the season is truly upon us. That point was driven home by reports of both the first swordfish and first marlin of the season. First the swordies. Two swordfish were caught on the 289 on Saturday. Steve Bledsoe on NO EXCUSES got one to take a frozen squid, and subdued the critter after two hours. The fish weighed 228.5 lbs on the DAC scales. Meanwhile, back at the 289, Eric Grennan on TIGER SPIRIT was feeling pretty bad about losing a broadbill earlier in the day until a second sword took the bait. The battle lasted an hour an a half, and Eric's fish weighed 302 lbs at the BAC dock. Steve mentioned that while he was fighting his fish, he could look off the stern and see Eric fighting his. Clearly a concentration of fish! We have a picture of Eric's beast in the Galeria and hope to have the same for Steve's soon.

As you might expect, such a bonanza of billfish made the 289 look like a landrush as anglers sped out on Sunday to stake their claim. No other swordfish were landed, but Jimmy Kingsmill on WILD BILL spotted a tailer on their way in (no surprise if you saw him at the 7Strand seminar last month) and got it to take a fresh mackie. At the time of release, they were about 13 miles out of Dana Point, off the power plant domes. Earlier in the day, Eric Nelson on ONO had a chance to beat Team Kingsmill to the punch when he successfully baited a marlin in the same basic area (14 miles, 198 from Dana). Unfortunately, the fish was lost just prior to leadering. You'll get'em next time, Eric! Lest we forget, the tuna are still running. We got good reports of albacore catches from the 1010 trench, the inner Butterfly, and a spot about 8 miles south of the twin 220s. The numbers for that last spot are 32° 39' / 118° 04'. Those are Hoose's numbers, so blame him if you get skunked ... :-) There were some bluefin reported at the 390 spot, along with the first decent dorado reports of the season, said to be stretched from the 9-Mile Bank up the coast almost into Dana Point. Stan

July 25 Gary Jasper and the crew of the "Wait-N-Sea" boated a 186 lb.   Striper near "the slide" off Catlina at about noon. The fish was caught on live bait, 30 lb test and required 1 hr 10 mins to land. It was weighed at Avalon and represents the first fish by a Marlin Club member. (But NOT the #1 flag, they didn't weigh it here at the club). Several other fish were seen in the area as well! Congratulations!

Tuesday the 25th fishing. Too tired--tough to remember what day it is. Left Mission Bay at 0445. Looked for paddies from 9 mile bank to 302 but found 0 paddies. Put lures out on porpoise school just west of 302. Headed to 230 and found kelp paddy for 7 yellowtail to 19 lb. Trolled towards 390 bank and caught 4 albies to 23 lb. 6-10 M from the 230 bank, between the 230 bank and the 390 (15N, 45W, more or less). Temp 65.8-66.4 here, but 66.7 at 302. Trolled only 3 hrs in these albie grounds, as 3 pm approached and headed in. Caught one more yellow right around the 230 bank. Weather sloppy. Wind came up yesterday afternoon without warning--I'm still trying to figure out why--all weather forecasts pointed to good weather. Tried to hail any boats near the 390 3 times but nobody responded. Absolutely empty out there. Final tally, 8 yellowtail, 4 albacore, and one mixed up ocean for 3 anglers.

Hi Dennis I had a rookie crew of three Texas boys and their Dad. They wanted tuna. Me too. Left the S.D. ramp at 5:30 am and headed toward the 43 but it was bumpy and a little windy. The dry ride was the 371 so we went with it. Saw lots of paddies but no one home. Went north in 68 deg. water but the action sounded like it was south. The Money Pit hit a YT around the 425 so we trolled that way. At about 12:00 we had a double. My rookie crew did everything they could to loose them but we managed to boat both. They both were over 30 lb. Albies. Trolled back over the #s until we had 7 long fin on board. All of them 20#s and up. No bait fish they liked the purple Rapala and feathers. The #s were 32-20-39 117-26-75 ( 26 miles south of Mission Bay jetty , on a 186 degree heading ~~~~`1 hour and 30 minutes at 17 knots) Lots of clean up and then they wanted to barbecue some up when we got home, I'm dead on my feet but sent them home smiling. Thanks Dennis Mike, Zech, David , Mark Jr., and Sir on the aFISHionado

Went out of Dana Point to about five miles out with a friend on a due South heading and dropped the trolling lines on the out riggers with large feathers, two more off the corners with rapallas and one down the middle with a "Ballyhood" daisey chain and ceader plug! Why not? The water under my 24 ft skippy was 72.8 degrees and it was flat calm and glassy at 1 pm in the afternoon. (Didn't stop for bait before we left.) In about 20 minuets we saw a fish jump dead a head,100 yds out! Then another! Then we saw the Paddy! Dorado! Off of Dana! Finally! We trolled by with everything out...No strikes! Damn! Congrats Gary, I was still sitting in the dock installing equipment. Great Fish ! The boat Reel treat had 31 dorado today off the 279 and south in very warm water. Largest dodo weighed in at 21 lbs averaged 16 lbs. They had lock jaw until we presented different baits , live baits and the ocean was foaming with them at times feeding. Found the best bite right on the tide change according to them. Lots and we mean lots of mako's with some size jumping out the water all over from dana point down to La Jolla. Stick Boats today were sticking an average of 3-5 fish these last two days with great reports off the mackrel bank of finning marlin and swordies.

Marlin Caught by Wait-N-Sea - First Fish Caught and Weighed at 186lbs for the BAC by the Wait -N- Sea- Gary Jasper.   This is Wait-N-Sea's 5th First Fish of the Season catch. Up way before dawn they sat on a three square mile of mackerel, by 6:30 this morning they had gone through 15 baits, casting to quick feeders, "A good show of fish" Gary said, then we found a slow tailer during the mid-morning slack which ate the cast bait. 186lbs taken on 30lb tackle, taken in 1 hour and 14 minutes. The prime area was off the Catalina Island's "The Slide", 60 degrees 6 miles or so. Lots of birds and bait centered there. They could see the mackerel being chased by the marlin, quick feeders that were only up for a second or two. When the marlin are on anchovies they stay up longer and it's easier to get up on them.

Just got back from Chicago ASA show damm what luck come back to find marlin been caught while I was away. So today I had to do it , down to Oceanside and troll troll troll. Hooked up our first stripper for the season and first for the boat and new team. Well Baited the marlin with live sardine on a drop back bait from a tuna tube, excellent method and quick since the marlin went for the lures and sunk out but the temptation of the live bait was too much and we had our hook up. I have to admit we did loose the fish just at the leader before we were able to leader it. Not even going to explain since we are all mad. Water was a warm 72.3 and off the break tailing we got this one that got away. Back out tomorrow I want to release our first marlin for our new boat

San Diego Marlin Club Fish Report - Marty Morris -   7/24/2000 5:53:31 PM PDT
Bright blue water off LaJolla and at least two paddies loaded with small Dorado. We got a double off of one, but one fell off. Good eating, anyway. 74 degree water off Carlsbad, but greenish. The "Wild Bill" saw two sleepers 4 miles off the Encinitas power plant. Harry saw a 2 finner in the gyros, but it sank out before we got to it. Marty

Hey Chris you back yet ? Where were you ? First Marlin of the year Caught and Released by the "Wildbill" Jim Kingsville as the angler, Bill at the helm. After seeing a sleeper off the Encinitas earlier in the morning they ran out to the Swordfish grounds, baited several unwilling swordfish in the same area as yesterdays fish were taken, a small pocket of warmer water. Working back to Dana Point in the afternoon with the hopes that the coastal body of warm water off Oceanside had pushed it's self up further along the coastline (which it had) they found an edge of 71 degree water temp. 13 miles off San Mateo Pt. After seeing and baiting so many other marlin this year. (and that goes to show how hard these guys fish, most angler have never even seen a fish so far this year) Jim couldn't believe his eye's as the slow uphill tailer lit up to his cast bait. Released after a 10 minute battle on 30 LB tackle Jim and boat claim the title of releasing the First Striped Marlin of the Season by a private sportfisher. They earned it. Congratulations! JD JD's Big Game 2000 Marlin Tournament still open as Jim had not entered it to it, says he thought about it but didn't.

Had a wild wild day trolling for Dodo's got hit twice between the 209 and the 279 stripped marlin took our lures on two occassions. Water was 72 Line was to light and this was a double strike within 15 seconds of each other two marlin. Two lures gone and very upset as we were not prepared, we were paddy hopping for yellows and dodo's Dodo's landed one for the day and a bunch of yellows but not the highlight of the day.

MARLIN - Steve Ross - Bad Dog  Date:  23 July 2000 Fish Report.
Arrived on the nine mile bank @ 0800. It was flat glass without a ripple with calm wind. Ran over the bottom of the nine which some SWYC guys call "Chuck's Hole" named after Chuck Cirello who as I recalled dumped 25 marlin  in a row there one season a while back on his boat "Fat Cat." After a few laps ran up the line of the center of the bank trolling my best 7Strand Clones 1220's and was being paced by a Grand Banks "Grander" who had the same idea. Found one empty paddy and made a U turn at the top and trolled back to the bottom and within 3 miles of the point. Returned to the slip without a single incident. Steve Ross/Bad Dog

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line   Joe Singer Jul-24-00, 11:26 AM (PDT)   "Tuna at tanner" we chunked overnight off tanner this weekend, and trolled for a few hours the next am. nothing on the troll. However, the night chancing was terrific. a big boat, and we still got pounded, but again the chancing at night was very effective. we got longfin throughout most of the night, about 10 to 30 lbs. and we seemed to get two different schools of bluefin. I think this based on that we either were catching 30 to 40 lb bluefin, or fish that seemed to go avg. about 65 lbs. but never at the same time.  The bluefin came through several times, never staying long. they seemed skittish, and we had to use very light leaders. the albacore were easy, eating everything.  I suggest everyone chunk at night, it is much more effective. interesting that just after daybreak we pulled the ball, and started trolling. saw nothing, got no strikes, and would have no idea that there were tuna there, if we had not chunked. "An Honorable Retraction" An amazing thing has happened. Several hours after reporting their fish, the crew of ONO sent me a second message. Apparently, while leadering their fish, which they had already committed to release, something happened and the line broke about 30 seconds before the actual release would have happened. Eric has decided that, in good conscience, he cannot take credit for this as a true "catch". While I certainly sympathize with Eric on the loss of what would have been his first marlin so tantalizingly close to completion, I respect his honesty.

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line   Date: 07/23/2000 10:21:25 PM PDT
I indicated in the earlier FF that I expected there might be other marlin taken today, and I was right. I just received word from Eric and Bob Nelson on ONO that they successfully released a marlin at 11:30 this morning. The fish was hooked on a live mackeral at a point 14 miles 198 degrees out of Dana, which would put it in about the same region as the WILD BILL fish. OK, anyone else have anything to report?   Stan

One day gone by and I'm finding myself writing another congratulations to another member. Talk about a one-two punch for Dana!! If Steves swordie wasn't enough, the Wild Bill pulled the First Marlin of the season and the First Flag for the Club out of the hat today at the 11th hour. After traveling from the barn to out in front of Encinitas where they saw two sleepers, to the 289 where they baited three more swords, then starting the run home, Jim Kingsmill was in the binos and saw a slow tailer going upswell and sucessfully baited, caught and released the fish. Jimmy got the fish about 13nm from Dana at approximately 5:00p.m. in front of the Domes.  A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the angler and crew of the Wild Bill!!! You guys are awesome! I have a feeling this is going to be a banner year!  Mike Tikunoff   Fishchair DAC 2000

Dennis: left Point Loma 1:30 AM. headed for an area between the 213 and the 1010. At first light put in the jigs and started looking. Within 30 minuites had our first jig strike on black and purple gold headed Zuker. Continued on the same line splitting the two banks within a few minutes had a second strike on blue dorado and several bait fish. They were coming half way out of the water. contined in the same area and contined getting stopped on blue dorado, orange and yellow and black and purple. Great quality on the Albies between 28 and 32 lbs. Ended the day with 16 nice fish for four of us. Lost about 6. Water in the morning 65.5 and in the afternoon 68.5. Nice flat water for the ride home. Thanks Floyd

ALBACORE/MARLIN - Allcoast Sportfishing - playnhooky  Jul-24-00 at 10:21 AM (PST)
"Weekend Report."- Arrived at the high spot on the Butterfly shortly after daybreak on Saturday with my friends Dave and Harold and we put the trolling gear out. Got on the radio and talked to Richard on "Go-Fisch" and Greg on the "Grander" and found out they already had a few fish. We decided to start our trek west and found the fish near the west end of the Butterfly. Ended up with 6 albies to 22 pounds with NO baitfish. We chummed like crazy and left the hooked jigfish in water on every stop but we had no luck getting them up to bite the dines or chovies. Very scratchy and we decided to head for SCI to see what else was around. Around 9:30 AM we started the long troll to the head. We spotted a tailing Marlin about 10 miles south of the head but he disappeared so we kept moving. We actually wanted to try a bit more west but a gunnery exercise was readying to commence so we opted to fish the lee side of SCI while waiting for the all clear scheduled for sunset. Trolled sardines on the east end and I hooked up and released a bonito that looked like about a 8 or 9 pounder. That was it for Saturday.

After a night of the boat getting pelted by flying fish most of the evening, we headed for the 312 fathom bank to look for paddies. We stopped on quite a few with bait until we were about 37 miles off the coast from Oceanside when we slid up on a small paddy and all hell broke loose when a big school of yellows came up pushing little speed baits all over the place. They woudn't touch a thing and we tossed sardines right into the boils for nothing. Harold noted his 5" fish trap "channel island chovie" looked like a good match so he tossed it and instant hook-up. Dave does the same and he's on. By the time I get mine tied on, Harold's fish is on the deck and Dave's pop's off. The fish stopped crashing the bait so we start trolling the purple fish traps about a hundred yards circling the paddy and my rig goes off. I get mine and Harold reels his in and tosses it again and his fish takes him right into the paddy to earn his freedom. That was it and give it up and move on. One last paddy on the way home 17 miles off and we tossed bait on it and Dave gets the first Dorado on the boat this year about 10 pounds or so. Made for a fairly interesting weekend all in all.  Tight Lines!

Had a Great day on the water Sunday. Hooked up with the Yellowtails hanging on the patties around the 425 spot. On the way home,(at 30mph), about half way between the 425 & the Coronados we saw a small marlin jumping after bait! Right after that, we stopped on a pattie full of Dorado that were hungry. Got a double hook-up on bait,(great bait from the guys at S.D. bay), with 15 & 20 lb. test. A couple of 15+ lb. DoDo's. Later, we farmed 1 & broke off another. Great radio communication out there between all the paddie hoppers. Keep it up guys. Thanks JT on the Papa Joe

In case you didn't hear the Wild Bill out of Dana Angling Club caught and released a Marlin at about 5:00 PM - live bait on a tailer - 13 miles out of Dana Harbor (off the Domes at San Onofre) on their way back from the 289 where they baited several broadbill yesterday and today. Angler was Jimmy Kingsmill. Marty

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line  - Date: 07/23/2000 9:00:54 PM PDT
This has certainly been a weekend for firsts, as yesterday's first swordfish is followed today by the first local marlin of the season. Jim Kingsmill, fishing as usual on WILD BILL, spotted a marlin about 13 miles out of Dana (off the Domes) and convinced him to take a bait. The fish was released at about 5 pm. Considering the number of boats pounding the oceans after yesterday's epic swordie day, I fully expect to hear of more fish taken today. We'll post the details at the site as we get them.  Stan

SWORDFISH - Southern California Marlin On-line  - Update 07/23/2000 7:37:11 AM PDT
Eric Grennan's swordfish was hooked on TIGER SPIRIT at three in the afternoon on the 289 (same place as Steve Bledsoe's fish just earlier) and was landed after a 1 hr 40 min fight. It weighed in at 302 lbs. Worth noting that it was the second one they hooked that day, the other falling off earlier. We had theorized that the warm water being funnelled across the 289 might have an impact on fishing, but this is ridiculous!   Stan

"Another Broadbill" Eric Grennan fishing on Tiger Spirit hooked a Broadbill on the 289 at about 3:00pm (today July22). After a fight of 1 hour and 40 minutes the Broadbill weighed in at 302lbs. This was the second Broadbill of the day, with the first the one just crushing the bait and not takeing a good hookset. What a great way to start the day!  Eric says he could not have done it with out the help from everyone on the boat. Thank you!!!! This was also Eric's first life time Broadbill, the first Broadbill for Tiger Spirit and the first Broadbill for Balboa Angling Club for this year.

SWORDFISH - Southern California Marlin On-line - Mike Tikunoff Jul-22-00, 08:18 PM (PDT) "FIRST SWORDFISH!"
I have just returned from the Dana Angling Club weigh station where I had the privilege of handing the First Swordfish Flag to Steve Bledsoe and the crew of the No Excuses. The fish was taken at the 289 and took approximately 2 hours to land. To my knowledge, this is not only the first for the Club but the first for the coast taken on rod and reel.

The fish was caught by the Captain himself (5 bucks says the crew wont let him touch another rod all year) and weighed in at 228.5 lbs. Steve caught the fish on the 80lb rig with a large frozen Popsicle (squid). Rich Duncan skippered the Boat and he said it was an e-ticket with the fish going under the boat more than once. Bob Cravens and new members David and Naill Devoy were also present for the catch with David acting as gaffer. Dave is now under the impression that it's like that here all the time and that this happens everyday!

A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the angler and the crew!!! This is a once in a lifetime catch, and to that there are no question marks. Mike Tikunoff - Fishchair DAC 2000

Hi Dennis, A quick report from today, I went out today on the "Dirtbag" with my friend Hap and his brother, we called the fish report and they said, several times, that it was rough outside. So we decided to go to the Islands, anyway we went outside just to see if it was true and it wasn't bad. It was a little rough in the morning and then it laid down and actually was nice on the trip in around 4:00 p.m.. We went out to the 224 and then south towards the 302, caught 6 albies, saw one dorado jump off a paddy, lots of bait, porpoise, etc.. Should be good tomorrow as there is a major temperature break just outside the 9-mile bank, (tuna on the left and dorado on the right). Happy hunting! Capt. Gil Marlin

Ran out heading 230 Water was 64.9 at first fish. Patty was next loaded with yellows , and two more albies only problem had two newbies on board, one was pukeing the other would keep putting the reel in free spool while he was reeling. Jig strikes and lots of willing bait fish, most lost at the gaff and sawed off lines but everyone had the right prospective its only a game. We made a big circle had action a least once ever half hour. Final score Newbies 7 Sore lipped Albies 10. Larry on the Santo Vitaro

Water was pretty sloppy (to put it mildly), so decided to try toward the inside. Fished from about 15 south of the 425 out to about 5 west of the 371. No albies, no jig strikes. Did manage 10 decent yellowtail off the paddies. A buddy caught 6 albies and 1 BFT around the 371. All were on jig strikes with nada on bait. His largest albie was a whopping 42 lbs on a good scale. All on p/b or Mexican flag. Guess I can't get'em every time. Good luck, Bruce

Left Sunday night on the Pegasus. Went SE of the 60 with a fleet of commercial jig boats and most all the SD sporties. It blew like no other, ugly in the trough. Started hanging jig fish (loco joe and carrot top Tuna Clones) at first light. We managed only a few baitfish, 2 on chrome/blue salas 6x jrs. and a couple on the Fish Trap. I had my first experience of gaffing an albacore ABOVE my head in the trough. We were getting beat up bad, and it was hard to work the bank in 25 knots and a large west lump. The charter decided to abort the trip, and we came in early. Signs on the 390 looked good for bluefin, if only the weather would of cooperated. Mother nature was not nice to us... We spent Sunday at SCI diving and fishing with my 10 year old and his friend, left monday 4am under bright full moon 8 mi south out of the head we got numerous jig stikes and bait stops. Never got farther than 12.5mi. Spooled once on 12 lb. Bluefin? Kids cought albies 20 to 40lbs until they were tired and throwing up. Wind 20 swell 6 to 10 ft. Back at the head by 10:00. WNW of the 289 saw one tailer, lots of white birds and really blue 67.5 to 68 degree water. Didnt get a good shot at the fish. I believe a good crew could pull one out of that area. Maybe this weekend. Good fishing. Rocky (slider)

Sometimes it seems that working for yourself is a lot of work! Well anyway finally got back out to look for the fish today after a tour of the east coast for the past three weeks. Started the day out of Shelter Island at 4:00 A.M. and ran down toward the 371. Found some very good looking water at about 5 miles north east from the high spot so began trolling around and looking for some paddies. Found a beautiful paddy and threw out some baits on it. BAM! Double on the yellowtail. Drifted off so went back up on it. Bam! another double on the tails. Fish were around 10-12 lbs and fat little pigs. Started goofing off with the light gear and seeing how many we could keep out of the weeds. Managed a few more but as always once the light gear goes in something mean comes along.

A buddy fishing with me hangs this monster tuna. It runs straight down like a run away train. Almost spools his 15lb gear but we manage to get it up and low and behold its a Yellowfin (or maybe a big eye I am not sure) this fish was in the 50-60lb class just a toad! Well the cinderella story ended just out of gaff range (even with my new longer gaff) POP!!!! Damnit! We watch it swim off. Big fish. Stayed in the area and boxed the fool out of it for nothing more so we decided to move over toward the 425. The cedar plug goes off and we manage to get up another LARGE Yellowfin not as big as the other but still around 40lbs. Spits the cigar again right at gaff! What in the world is going on around here? I wonder. Guess tuna wasnt part of the plan today after all. Found another paddy holding a few more nice yellowtail and as we are fighting the fish a whole school of DORADO come cruising by to take a look. Put the rod in the holder and grab a bait to get me one of them but nothing doing. They stayed around the boat watching us with those yellowtail but would not eat. Even tried to put some cut baits out and one did come over and eat a chunk and immediately jumped out of the water to give us a show. Too bad that chunk didnt have a hook in it. Smaller grade of dorado but dodo none the less. Ended the day at the islands for a half dozen of them baby wahoo errr I mean slimes.  Water was snotty with serious white caps and a very long run home. John your kidney would have dropped guaranteed!  Limits of tail not bad for fishing in the "Perfect Storm!"    T-Shooter

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line Stan  -  July 17
It never fails. Every time we write off the tuna fishing, BANG! it heats up again! It's probably just my billfish bias, hoping that the sooner the tuna clear out, the sooner the marlin will start to bite ... :-) But tuna are once again the main story. We had theorized that the weather might be a bit rough this weekend, and every trip report we received mentioned the lumpy swells. But those party boats and private boaters who braved the weather were rewarded with a widespread albacore bite that often included numerous and sizable bluefin tuna. Sunday's landing counts showed some of the largest numbers of the season. Most of those fish came from outer banks such as the Mushroom, Worm, and the upper reaches of the Dumping Ground. For those unwilling to run so far, good quantities of albacore were found on the 60-Mile Bank, the 213, and especially the 390. It was at that last spot that our best bluefin tuna reports came in from, with some fish going as big as 100-lbs for those with live bait and heavy tackle. The billfish report remains promising, as reports of both marlin and swordfish continue to trickle in. The largest number of marlin were reported on the 209, with one report of a jig strike northwest of the 289.

We don't usually deal in rumor here at SCMO, but I heard that this year's BAC Masters tourney will be an all-release event. If so, kudos to the club and its members for taking this positive step. Hopefully, we are heading towards a day when a tournament that credits dead fish is as rare as one credits releases was only a few years ago

Had a number of friends with bigger boats in the 381 to outer 267 area that had decent to good fishing on 18-22# albies. Seems to be a new area as there was no sport boats on it at all. BTW, things are changing fast in the CAST albie division.Watch for the Wednesday update!!! Good Luck, MarkW

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishing -  ""Bad Dog" bites #1 C.A.S.T. Albie"   -  Jul-17-00
Weighing in at 32 1/2 pounds Dan Hart's certified scale at Hook, Line and Sinker has recorded the #1 heaviest albacore to date for the C.A.S.T. tournament. Caught this weekend by my wife Gail, as I lifted it over the transom we looked at each other with wide eyes and she yelled..."Whoa" exchanging high fives...."that's a toad." Deciding to lunch on 7Strands Tuna Clone colored "Loco Joe" was this fish's final error. Call it a coincidence, presentation of the jig, whatever you want, but this jig has outfished all of my infamous unbeatable jet heads. Last week we missed by 7 ounces to take over 3rd place with a fish over 29 pounds that also chose Loco Joe over the rest of the pattern. This week "Loco Joe" proved its worthiness as a Hall of Fame contender. You know what they say....location, location, location......here it is 32.17.19/117.30.43 produced albacore for both Saturday and Sunday. Dan Hart said that this tournament will be won by a 50 pounder, so Bad Dog will bask in its glory for a few more days anyway until a bigger fish shows up. Bigger fish have been caught, just not entered....oh well. Burnin drags and red decks for us...clear for traffic on channel 72, we're out....Steve

BLUEFIN - Finnseeker: Posted by Ray on July 17, 2000 at 10:08:41:
Fished the 60 MILE BANK and we hooked up some Albies. weighed 20 - 22 lbs but story of the day was our big BLUEFIN, BIG BLUEFIN!!! We had to quickly break out our heavy gear and we immdiately were on 4 rods and all 4 lines bent over BIG BLUEFIN, one at 113 pounds, which took an 20min to land. The fish definitely had the advantage and we forgot about the weather. We lost lots more than we came home with 9 huge BFT and i think 15 or so albies we lost count.

Just got the boat back and in the water Friday evening from having new electronics installed. Guess what nothing was working and through holes leaking. Went out fishing Sunday water was red with the red tide and headed out towards the 277 and 14 water was cold 63 so immediately turned around and headed south. 67.4 water temp break and found macrel feeding suddenly no mackrel while we were making bait and saw a huge Mako over 7ft cruise towards the bait. Baited the Mako fought her and released her, she was over 7ft and approximately 300-400 lbs. Had just finished enjoying the moment when we saw a second even larger Mako cruising by so off we went at it again only this time the mako was large enough and one of the ppl on board had never caught a mako this large we decided to give her a go and catch this one. Well to put a long story long fight to an end we lost the fish at the boat on the gaff . Gaff, Fish, line and pride all gone aftre fighting the fish. This took her one second to get rid of us after all we went through. The beam is 13 feet on our boat and the fish was 3/4 the length when gaffed at the swim step and exploded estimated over 400 lbs. Needless to say came in all bruised and beat up Mako's 3 that day us 0

ALBACORE - Marty Morriss   7/16/00 8:56pm
Here it is - the report you didn't want to hear. Harry Okuda's new boat, the Alresco III, a 46 ft Hatteras is undergoing the State's 90 day out of town visitation rights. So "we" (5 hearty soles) drove down Friday night and, after weighing all the reports, decided to head out towards the Dumper. We did experience the fact that one is "always" capable of "making" bait (i.e. Mackeral) at the receiver. About 15 in three minutes convinced us of the validity of "someone's" observation. We weren't able to get away til about 11:00, found rather sloppy seas with the NW winds still blowoing. So we motored out at 8 1/2 knots with a goal of 96 (?) miles. That would have put us there about noon, so we simply put the jigs in the water at day light (55+ miles) and continued on and out. Between then and about 8:30 we had 3 single jig bites, one fell off and one weighted in at a hefty 6 pounds. Harry has a wonderful Furuno 64 mile radar and picked up the fleet (about 8 boats) up ahead. When we reached them at least two were stopped - for ???. Between 9 and 1 we had zero bites (as in none). (Early morning bite?) No bird life and only mutterring from the other skippers. The wind had picked up and it was really nasty. We were somewhere northeast (apparently not far enough north or east - as in the 60 mile bank) and decided to start the long tek back to Ensenada. Shortly after we got a double with 2 bait fish, and every so often a single bite. Ultimately, we wound up with 11. As it was getting darker we found a kelp patty and had the 'tails boiling on the chum. We wound up with 4 of them kind.

Finally, we pulled 'em in, ran at 15 knots til really dark, and then slowed to 9.5. With a full moon and broken skies the water was lit up and made the running tolerable, despite the steady wind out of the northwest. The Todos Santos lighthouse showed at 16 miles which confirmed that the radar, GPS and compass were all correct. So we never were able to check out the Banda Bank although Harry has had reports that the local shark fishermen have been seeing the "you-know-whats." He doesn't have a sea temp on the boat yet so - so don't ask me about water temps. From the reports we now have it appears that the big bite was just outside the 60. Butterfly by Wednesday? Stay tuned. S---! I'd rather be Marlin fishing. Marty

HI Dennis, What a TRIP! We took a six pack boat out of San Diego on the "INSTINCT" with Cap'n Dan and Crew. At 6 am on Saturday we were trolling at the 60 MILE BANK and we hooked up some Albies. We started bait fishing and LOW and BEHOLD, BLUEFIN, BIG BLUEFIN!!! Most of our gear had 25-35 lb. test line and we hooked up with 6 BIG BLUEFIN, one at 100 PLUS pounds, which took an hour and a half to land. The fish definitely had the advantage. We lost 8 big bluefins due to our light tackle. Unfortunately we were not expecting the big bluefins. We caught seven albies averaging around 20 pounds. Our total catch for the day was 13. The fish won this round, but we will be back. We all want to thank Cap'n Dan and the Crew of the "INSTINCT" for a GREAT trip!!! OH YEAH, the only lady (BLONDE) on the boat caught the first fish AGAIN! Next time, she may swim home.

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishing -The rest of the story"  Posted by Aluminator on Jul-16-00 at 11:16 AM (PST)
Fri started off to be our first over nighter to the 1010 area. Left San Diego at 4pm with a new EPIRB and hand held VHF (just in case) Near 6pm we are talking to another PB'S (GETTIN UGLY) that is on his way back form the 1010 area. He said that they got some but the bite had dropped off. Then we hear from "HAPPY HUNTER" and they told us that they did well inside of the 390. Well with the sea up and 6 more hours to go we spent the night at the 390 and it paid off. Our first albacore came at 5:30 and 10 more in the next hour. Nobody around so its a good time to put out the #s. Now remember that we are only sharing the info that we got from Getting Ugly and Happy Hunter the night before. Within 1/2 hour lots of takers showed up and lots of BIG fish were caught! We headed in early and picked our largest tuna near the 302 next to a paddy. 30+ Lots of boats at Shelter Island trying to trailer-up but it went well. Again a BIG THANKS to Gettin Ugly and Happy Hunter for saving us the nasty ride to the 1010 trench. We saw Mark (SEA-HAG) as he was fishing with Richard on his really nice boat GO FISH.Dennis (ALUMINATOR)

"Thanks"  Posted by Reel Taz on Jul-16-00 at 11:29 AM (PST)
Dennis, Thanks for the numbers. We were making slow progress towards the 60 mile bank and 1010 trench. Conditions weren't looking promising, so a hot report was REALLY appreciated. We managed 10 or 11 fish. I counted 11 coming aboard, but only 10 in the hold at the end of the day. Go figure! I sure hope I can still count past 10. Our biggest was 18 lbs. What does a guy have to do to get one of those 30 to 40 pounders that were being bragged about? There was a fairly large boat that appeared to be aluminum out there. Cantilevered radar over the house. Was that the Aluminator? My boat is a Davis "Radoncraft" Cortez 22. Green stripe and gold rocket launchers. It shows up pretty well in a crowd. It's good to finally get out and start matching up some names and boat profiles.  ill

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishing - "Saturday Albie Report" - captainal - Jul-15-00 at 10:32 PM (PST)
Just got home from a good Albie day near the 390 out of San Diego- Got one fish over 40 pounds and all the others were 15-24 pounds. The water has smoothed down a lot as has the wind. Lot of bait and breaking fish. The bait was both anchovy and sardine and VERY HEALTHY- We honestly only lost 3 baits! Best bites for both jig and baitfish is as follows: 32.05-117.40, 32.10/117.45, and 3201/11750. Work just before the 390 and south of it.A big temperature break was present going from 65.5 down to 63.9. Best jigs were Fish Traps, on leadheads pulled at 6.5K and the usual dark in the morning and lot of color in the afternoon. The fish bit from 5:30 AM to 9:30 and started up again around 1:30 until we quit at 3:00- Its bedtime- Good Luck.

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishing - Saturday Albacore Report - Aluminator on Jul-15-00 at 6:23 PM (PST)
for those of you heading out tomorrow this will be short but to the point. Some longfin at the 302 but we found the masses 9 miles NE of the 390. Thats about 33-35 miles on a 210 from shelter island. We had 10 in the boat from 6-7am. Nice size to 30+. We started with dark feathers and changed to bright ones within 1/2 hour. Only one on bait that I farmed at the boat. As you all know I have cleaned tuna over 35# without entering them in CAST but to stay honest the big ones were not caught by me this time. First fish was at 5:30 and we stopped fishing at 11am.
TOTALS 13 tuna
1 yellow tail
99999 Macks for sharken
THIS WELL GET YOU ON THE FISH FOR SUNDAY - Dennis (ALUMINATOR)
PS. I forgot to say that some NICE BFT were or said to be caucht West from the point around 50-60 miles. One near 50# with long fin mixed in.  GOOD NIGHT

Hi Dennis, Saturday July 15, We took Hank's boat, Reel Viking, down to a spot about five miles south west of the 60 Mile bank. With 5 on board, including Hank, Phil, Mike, Larry and myself. We were buddy boating with Eggs to Sea and hooked up with another boat. We were planning on three days out, staying overnight at Todos Santos of the Coronado's. Of course we were taking it easy, no rush, when the other boat called us about 8 am and said that they were into the fish. We headed their way and picked up our first Albie about 8:30AM. As we got across the 60 mile bank, we began to meter fish. We circled the area picking up a few here and there, then about 10:30 we picked up a few on a bait stop. We made a few short moves and all hell broke loose. Bait fish, jig fish (any color we put in the water). This was probably the best day we have had in the last two years. We ended up about 12:30 PM with 40 Albies and one Blue Fin. We farmed a few and had some great hits that had to be Blue Fin, but only landed the one. Needless to say, with the Mexican law saying you can not have fillets on the same boat that caught them, we decided to head for home (no way to keep 40 fish whole and cold). Hank's Pacifica 36 ran great. Looks like the last 6 months of work have paid off, and boy can that boat bring the fish up. We are really looking forward to the next trip. The pressure is off now, with the freezer full. By the way, Painintheass Fred, went down below the 425, to the area you pointed out to me Friday, and limited out.

Hi Guys, Fished with Richard again this weekend aboard Go Fish. Launched out of Oceanside Harbor at 0100. Started off at the 371 and worked our way out to the 390. It was a little slow on the Albacore for us today as we only hooked 3 and farmed 2. We did work a few paddies and got 7 nice size Yellowtail. We saw lots of Flying Fish out today; I never did see so many before. May be a good Marline season? Not a great trip but always nice to be out on the water. And there's always next time to look forward to. See ya on the water. Mark Out ><}}}*>

ALBACORE- Affordable Marine: Saturday -  July 15th  - 8:39 pm
Fair fishing today in and around the 302 and 371 areas , Albacore and the odd kelp pattie held some yellowtail. Never really heard much about the bite a the Coronado Islands or La Jolla . The 1010 and 390 areas (15- 20 miles further south ) had much better fishing, most of the charter boats caught limits of albacore, (the counts were up over 1,400 Albacore for the fleet today , about the 4th best count all year!) and a handful of bluefin each boat. Some of the Bluefin were up to 60 lbs , so don't forget the bigger gear!

left shelter island at 4:45. got a nice scoop of 'dines and headed for the 1010 trench. Had three jig stops between 10:15 and 11:15. ended up getting four jig fish, and one on bait in that hour with a couple others lost. about 12:30 the wind started getting stronger (there were white caps at 8 a.m.) and we were 70 miles from the point so we decided to clean fish and then head for the barn. about 35 miles from the point we heard the Alluminator. he was heading out so we decided to let him know how we did. Happy Hunter heard us talking and called up to let us know that he had 19 fish and the majority of them were taking about 28 miles from the point and that we should give it a try. so that we did. we stuck in the jigs and picked up three more fish in an hour and a half with a couple more lost on bait. thank you very much happy hunter for the info on that, it was greatly appreciated. so total for the day was 8 albies. two were babies and the others were between 20 and 26 pounds. water temp the whole day was between 65.1 and 65.7. there were no temp breaks at all. thanks again to Happy Hunter and congrats on such a great day.   Gettin' Ugly

Thursday ALBIES? Not Left O’side around 1 pm with Jeff on the TERRAFIN heading for tuna grounds (SW off 43 look promising on the SST charts) . After 16 WET miles Jeff looked at the LATEST SST chart and we decided to turn in (91*) and look at a hot spot off Del Mar & La Jolla area. Jeff been watching it develop for the last week and it looked INTERESTING!! It was still a little snotty but fishable. We set out the Marlin jigs in hope of fame and action. After a few the reel went off! JUMP, JUMP, we looked at each other SHARK! O well a nice MAKO about 53 inches. It eat great, the first of the year. Its nice to have back up info when the seas are aren’t that calm! CHUM

Left Wednesday evening with the Wife for South Island for a decent night sleep. Woke up at 1 am for the run down to the trench. Sloppy conditions all the way down. Fished a small area inside and up from the trench for five singles and two double jigstrikes with the Mexican Flag color working best. No marks, little bird life and 65.3 degree water. Of the fish we caught four were keepers 20 to 25 Lbs and the rest were catch and release 6 to 8 pounders. Weather was sloppy the whole time. All the sport boats were spread out from the upper Airplane down to below the Double 220. This Albacore season is turning out to be very interesting. Fishing today really felt like the start of the season with scattered jigstikes and know meat. I worked with a boat called the "Osprey" from Dana Point. Hope that wind back off for you.

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line   Joe ValeCruz "Air Spot"  - 7/14
I'm a Navy helo pilot and I like to look around while I'm out conducting training flights in and around the SOCAL area. Yesterday evening (the 12th) noticed alot of surface activity in the vicinity of 260 degs true between 17-20nm off PT Loma. Most of it was porpoise but I can swear there was one spot that just had tons of fish going nuts. That lasted for only about 10 minutes then subsided. Also, while in the pattern waiting to land on a ship in that area there was at least one Marlin that jumped. Diving birds were in the vicinity of the jumper. Unfortunately couldn't make out a positive VID on the contact but it wasn't a marine mammal. Don't know if this helps anyone out. Next time we're doing some overwater training don't be surprised if a Navy helo calls you up on Bridge to Bridge to give you a courtesy spot.

YELLOWFIN unconfirmed - Affordable Marine:  Date: July 14
Yellowfin tuna have arrived , check out the porpoise for the jig strikes , but please stay your distance so you don't push the fish down for the rest of the boaters. Private boaters caught some yesterday same size as the albacore . 371 AREA

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line Stan   -  July 13
We'd love to tell you the tuna bite was red-hot. We'd love to tell you the marlin had arrived. But in both cases we'd be lying, and we try to keep that to a minimum. Last week's upturn in the albacore numbers was short-lived, and by yesterday the San Diego boats numbers were down to less than a fish per rod. Some are still being scratched out, of course, with the 213, 220's and 1010 Trench seeing most of the action. Of interest is the fact that, while the numbers are down, the percentage of bluefin tuna is up. In fact, we received a report of a 91-lb bluefin being caught in the region. If you're willing to run a far as the Dumping Grounds, there's a rumor that the numbers might be greater. But that's a loooong way to go, and weather reports today were of windy conditions (despite what the forecasts said). Still no marlin or swordfish taken, although the numbers of fish being seen continues to rise. Several reports were received of good numbers of swordfish (and stickboats) on the Mackeral Bank, and several marlin were seen between the 289 and Pyramid Head. We remain optimistic ...

Forgot the wind and fought the fish for 32 min on 15 lb test, what a battle and 5 beers later. Hey guys do you ahve a gallery section where I can post my photo and show you this beauty. ALBACORE - Marty Morris -   Wednesday fish report       Date: 07/12/2000
Last week-end brought the resurgence in the the long-fin fishing with outstanding scores from the 220/220 to the 213 areas. But slowly the bite dropped into the week. Nevertheless, five of us ventured down along with the entire fleet on a 195 heading to approzimately the 1010 trench area. The night weather was great for cruising on down, but the bait kind of weak. This was the first time in years that I have found the bait boats at the receivers at midnight. And only 'dines. If they had chovies the sport boats got 'em. In the AM the weather was fine, but the fishing had definitely taken a turn for the worst. It turned out to be very scratchy during the day for almost everyone. It sounded like maybe one of the sporties did well, but very slow for everyone else. One yacht managed to limit out (4 bodies) in the 1010. We got a few there and it turned out to be a little better at the bottom of the 213. Someone at the 220/220 reported large numbers of very small (6 lbs?) fish. For the most part, our fish (along with everyone else) were in the 20-25 pd range. We managed to scratch out 18 for the 5 of us. We had a couple of two bait fish stops and one 3 bait fish. So it turned out to be almost 50% bait fish. Since the bait was bad we couldn't chum too much and I am sure we would have done much better with more bait in the water. And no sign of BlueFin for us. The wind picked up a little in the afternoon, but no problem. Water temp was around 65.4-5 most of the day. For the week-end? I couldn't guess. For tomorrow? probably the 213.  Marty

Made the long trip from Pt. Loma to 213 for 8 albies and 2 yellows. Beautiful water but popcorn on return banged hard at 22 knots. Fish were shy for everyone so it looks like we did have a good day comparitively. Fleet spread out from the 1010 trench to the 213. Same story with dark colored lures taking most of the fish. Several bait fish but typically not coming to the boat. Average size is good at 22 lbs. No bluefin to be seen. Fair bit of bait in the area so when they want to bite, it should be the place to be. Closest fish at 57 miles. Bait receiver very busy at 11 p.m. with sports fleet doing their thing. Probably have better selection before 10 p.m. Good luck

LEG 5: Continue SE following temp edge to just above the 302 Spot (32.40.00/117.35.00)
LEG 6: Return N to Oceanside Airport
APPROXIMATE FLIGHT TIME: 2.7 HOURS

PRE-FLIGHT: Before we even got off the ground we had trouble with our itinerary as a last minute check with the Navy at San Clemente Island revealed missle testing on both sides of the island and closed airspace from sea level to 80,000 feet extending from way inside the 43 Spot all the way to the south and west, as well as the entire backside of the island closed out past the Cortes and Tanner Banks. So much for searching for tuna out there. We quickly modified our flightplan to take us directly south to the area of the 371 and 425 Spots, and then on to the inside near the Coronado Islands and the 9 Mile Bank. A quick call the Flight Services and to U.S. Customs and we were on our way.

LEG 1: Immediately after take-off we encountered a swarm of party and private boats fishing about 1 mile outside the Oceanside Harbor Breakwall (33.12.60/117.27.00). A quick headcount yielded far more sporties than Helgren's offers, and closer inspection showed that indeed several of the Dana boats had come that far south to fish. Seabirds swarmed the area apparently marking barracuda mixed with yellowtail which were being targeted by the group.

LEG 2: We turned south and contacted San Clemente Island control to let them know our intentions. The first twenty or so miles were mostly empty except for a paddy or two which appeared to be dry. As we approached the highspot of the 224 and 302 Spots we saw the telltale marks of bait being pushed to the surface nearly four miles ahead of the aircraft. Our path took us nearly over the frenzy ( at 32.32.60/117.35.70, 32.31.40/117.34.87, and 32.28.11/117.31.17), which was made up of countless schools of anchovies being pushed to the surface by mackerel and possibly some gamefish. This certainly would be a hot area for makos, and possibly the next stop for any tuna working into the area. A few boats were seen way on the perimeter of the area (2-3 miles out) but none seemed to notice the activity.

LEG 3: We continued south towards the 371 Spot but turned east a few miles short with no boats or sign of fish in sight. Our short trip in towards the Coronados included an encounter with a small amphibious ultra-light which was out in search of blue whales while filming for an upcoming TV documentary. The craft is actually a manned camera platform and has a chase boat which follows him around for safety reasons. If you are fishing within a 25 mile radius of the Coronados and spot blue whales please send us an e-mail or call us at (760) 929-0712 as soon as possible so we can help these guys out.

LEG 4: We flew just south of South Island, then up the inside of the islands and passed over most of the US 3/4-day fleet and a horde of private boaters fishing for yellowtail and barracuda at the Middle Grounds proper. The rest of the island group and surrounding spots was barren.

LEG 5: We continued northward over the Nine Mile Bank, then up the coast past La Jolla. About 9 miles west of Torrey Pines was another smaller area of life with several baitballs again being worked by mackerel and a few smaller pods of porpoise. Looking to the SW the hard current break between the warmer inshore waters and the cooler offshore waters was clearly visible extending to the northwestas a dark band of clear and clean water extending from the break to the horizon.

LEG 6: Upon arrival at Oceanside we made one last spin over the fleet fishing for barracuda and yellows just north of and outside the harbor, then headed for home.

COMMENT: Most of the better waters were off limits on this flight including the area outside of San Clemente Island, the 43 Spot, The Butterfly Bank, the 60 Mile Bank, and the Boomerang Bank. We had hoped to check up on info from these areas but were unable to do so.

Next flight will be Wednesday the 17th of July.

ALBACORE - Finnseeker:  Steve N on July 11, 2000 at 00:31:53
Left for the 181, cold so we trolled towards the 43 and got atwo jig strikes, one stuck the other we boated a nice 27 lb Albie. A few miles on we saw a paddie first one and it had a school of yellows. They went down when we arrived so we chummed and chummed and bingo they bit on live bait. We landed 11 nice yellows on this stop smallest fish weighed 19 lbs and biggest was 34.8 lbs. The bite soon dies at the sight of some sharks and large , not sure what shark it was just that it was chasing the yellowtails away. Back into Dana by 6.00 pm and all smiles with our one Albie and 11 yellows to everyones surprise at the fuel dock. ( where did you find get those ? ) Off the 43 and 181 temp break

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:  Date: July 11th
I finally took off a day and went fishing! We left this morning at 1 am from mission bay and headed 70 miles south to the 1010 trench (184 degree heading) water temperature was 65 from the 371 down , lots of meter marks through out the whole area , we saw life at 50 miles and put the jigs out and got hammered with a double to start the day ~`(this wasn't even one minute into it!) ( somehow you know it's going to be a ripper when that happens !)  Caution !! We got ripped on some nice sized Bluefin at times while fishing bait and couldn't stop em , I don't think anything less than 40 lb would have done the trick! All of our biggest albacore came on the bait . Got a few more nice albacore in that area and then a while later picked em up and headed to the 1010 where it was wide open fishing , great bait stops every few minutes ~~~ lots of good entertainment . The Albacore were anywhere from 12 -35lbs . The smaller ones under 20 lbs we released all morning long . Plenty of fish , had to stop and head home . Seas were nice all day except for the last few miles , but I was was sleeping so how would I know? Dennis from sandiegofishing.com

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:  Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2000 21:59:19 -0700 Subject: Trench Report
Launched ~0300 skipped bait barge and ran to upper end of trench. first fish 31.51 X 11748 ~~baby ~ 6lbs. 3 fish @ 31.47 X 117.46. 2 fish @31.46 X117.46. single @ 31.45 X 117.46 couple of times could get bit on blu chrome iron of the slide but not on fish traps. except for baby fish #1 avg was ~17 lbs tops was 25 lbs. No Bluefin. fish hit every thing no preference shown. HUGE THANKS TO "AFTERNOON DELIGHT" for calling us in on their good bait bite so we could throw iron on it. My self, Buddy Tim and his 13 year old son each scored a nice one on that spot. Plenty of boats stopping for 1s 2s and 3s in the general area. Fish came up and bit better towards late morning. headed home by 1130. Beautiful water conditions all day long - just unbelievable! Sorry for the crude report but I'm wasted goodnight!

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line  Stan July 10
If you've checked the counts in the morning fish wrap, you already know that the albacore bite went through the ceiling over the weekend. A new wave of fish were found on Saturday, and by Sunday Point Loma Landing was reporting a 1700-fish day. Not bad, considering everyone thought the tuna were toast just a few days ago. The fish were found about 70 miles from Pt. Loma, between the 213 and the twin 220's. That's about the same latitude as Punta Banda, just in case you're checking your fuel capacity. The nice thing is that it appears there were some epic bait stops along the way, which has not been the norm so far this year. Further to the north, the albacore are much more scarce. This caused a great deal of consternation to the Dana Angling Club, who held their annual tuna tourney over the weekend. The fleet ended up working the back side of the 43, with most boats scratching out about a half dozen longfin for the weekend. The only positive note was that the weather, which had been nasty all week, finally cleared in time for the weekend. We'd like to see those fish from down south make their way up here, but there's a large band of colder water they'll have to cross if they're to do so. Rumor and innuendo continue to be the watchwords for the local billfish efforts. Several boats make exploratory runs this weekend, with lots of life seen but no marlin. We're still waiting for that first catch, and may have to wait a bit longer, I'm afraid.

We use a lot of different sources to piece together these reports. Each source has some information of their own, but a lot of the dope is passed from source to source so that we all know what is going on. That point was driven home to me as I checked with one of the fish report phone lines last week and had my own fish report read back to me ... :-) So what's the point, you say? Just this - the information we gather goes out to a lot of different sources. In addition to the posting here and the FishNet News Digest we send out each Wednesday, our fishing news is reprinted at over 10 other fishing sites nationwide, include two new ones starting this week. There's a lot of people depending on us for good information, and that means depending on you for your trip reports. Our oft-imitated Trip Reporter was the first board dedicated to local fishing dope, straight off the water, and it is still one of the most popular ones around. Over 5000 people have viewed the reports at the new forum since it was introduced only a few weeks ago. Obviously, people value the information. So when you get home after your next trip, don't forget to take a few minutes to file a report. In the next few days, we'll be posting a guide to help you write better reports that will help us all know where the fish are - or aren't. And don't be afraid to tell your fishing buddies to file a report as well. After all, the only bad trip report is the one that doesn't get written ...

MAKO - Finnseeker: Posted by Chris on July 08, 2000 at 21:42:12:
Mako's are all over from the domes , Dana Point, Newport beach and the 14 Mile bank and thick. Just received an accurate report the albacore are wide open 70 miles out again seems they moved from the hot weather push. When the commercial boat gets in I will have an accurate update on the exact location for the Albacore bite.

SWORDFISH - Finnseeker: Posted by Lance Wilks on July 08, 2000 at 00:58:44: We were chumming on the 14 mile bank high spot and saw two sword fish swim right through our chum slick Shit no live bait and no chance of attempting to bait this. Frustrating it hurts to watch him breeze on by. Tried to call stick boats in, anyone have any info on the commercial channel they monitor since they could have had this one. We tagged several blues and baby mako's Tight lines Lance

ALBACORE - Finnseeker:  Posted by Tim Leray on July 08, 2000 at 13:43:31:Went out early this morning from Oceanside found a nice temp 30 miles out and albacore galore. Turned around and headed back and found a virgin paddy with yellows right off the stax. Not bad for 8hrs of fishing and back in time for sons b/day.

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:  (Steve Ross) Date: Sat, 8 Jul 2000 Subject: Who is Loco Joe?
I didn't know Loco Joe from Wahoo Willie until I received it in the mail from Bob Hoose @ 7Strand Tackle. It's an albacore tuna clone made by his Company. He insisted on my having one so he shipped it to me and I received it Thursday. So I rigged it Thursday night and included it in the pattern trolling on the 302 Saturday July 8. At 32.27.02/117.33.87 at 1:58 p.m. Loco Joe was swallowed by a 29 pound 1oz. albacore after a tough day for everyone pounding the water. It was our 2nd albacore for the day and Gail was the angler straining at the rail. It measured over 36" and after conferring with buddy boaters we knew this was a CAST contender. So we sprinted to Hook Line and Sinker only to find out it missed by 7 ounces to show. On my new Outrageous 8' custom Cal-Star I landed a 10 1/2 pound personal best bonito off a paddy on the 302 with a live sardine. He was all by himself even after additional heavy chumming. Loco Joe has brought Bad Dog it's biggest ever albacore and we'd like to thank Bob @ 7Strand for introducing us....it's a wild thing. The 302 is a greylight bite for a few and a late afternoon thing for a few others. A few found yellows under paddies while we found empty hotels. The 302 seemed to be the only place locally for albacore while I heard that someone did good below the 1010 trench. The water was 3-5' with some wind, not real pleasant but fishable. Forget about temp breaks, we caught them in the middle of anything so to speak. They're on the bait. Steve on the Bad Dog

ALBACORE - Southern California Marlin On-line: Saturday Report - Aluminator on Jul-08-00 at 09:09 PM (PST)
Hello to all and its nice to be back with a report. Got an early 3 am start from Shelter Island and headed out past the others stoped at the 302 on toward the 60 mile bank. We had BFT on our minds but did pick two nice 30# yellows on the way out. Our first longefin came 50 miles from the point on a 222 degree heading and then had a triple five more miles down the line. Thinking it was going to be another day of limits we were all smiles. Well that was it for the day. All on dark feathers no bait fish other than the yellows. The tuna were around 20-25#. Dennis H. (ALUMINATOR)

Allcoast Sportfishing Private Boater's - Saturday Albacore Report - Aluminator on Jul-08-00 at 12:37 PM (PST)
I left Shelter Island at 3AM Sat with Jim Day and his fishen buddy Mike. After a fuel filter change and bait we were under way again by 4AM. We ran by the others at the 302 and headed to the 60 mile bank looking again for the BFT. Stopped on two paddys for 2 nice yellows 25-30# then a single jig stop 15 miles short of 60 miles for the first long fin 20+ # range. 5 miles down the line it was a triple same size.

ALBACORE - Some sport boats posted limits for Saturday.......

MARLIN - Southern California Marlin On-line  Stan  July 6
We have a marlin report! An honest-to-God, eye-to-eye, fish-on-the-line marlin report! We had predicted that the first marlin could go over the 4th of July, and Tim Spaeth on SNICKELFRITZ did his best to oblige us. Trolling 12 miles off Oceanside, a marlin hit a purple lure in the spread and was off to the races. Unfortunately, as stripeys tend to do, this one was a greyhound and spit the hook after a half hour. But at least now we know they're really here. Tough break, Tim. There were also a few swordfish baited inside the lee of San Clemente Island. The good news for tuna is that there are still some around; the bad news is that they're widely scattered and thin. Most of the places that produced in weeks past are kicking a few albacore out, primarily southwest of the 43 and down the slide from Pyramid Head. But the numbers are way down, and you have to wonder if the warming water is putting an early end to the tuna season. Of course, we got so spoiled the last couple of years ...

MARLIN - Chris   06 Jul 2000 17:28:52
"Chris" "Big mako's hanging around again and hungry if you can get past the blues. Water temp 68 and nice yellowtails close inshore mixed with the barries. 6 miles off Dana Point. Baited our first marlin close inshore without success, marlin was jumping around the bait in 70 degree water"

BAIT - Allcoast Private Boater's  Posted by Bad Dog on Jul-06-00 at 10:33 AM (PST)
For the past few weeks 3 seiners from San Pedro have been hauling mackeral NW of Pt. La Jolla from 2 miles and out. fishspotters reports seeing them returning to San Pedro a day or two ago and I pulled up to one last Wednesday night while they were in a set. If they left any I would presume you could find macks there. I heard of one PB'er who made squid this week in the La Jolla Canyon probably at the beginning of it toward shore. They then proceeded to catch WSB off Scripps Pier with their live squid. I have heard that a few white seabass have been caught off South Coronado Island with squid in their stomachs but I don't know of anyone hunting the squid in that area as the WSB have been eating sardines and the extra work to catch squid has not been necessary. On Monday of this week I made 30 pieces of mackeral out in front of Hotel Del Coronado, but this seems to be a tide thing as others tried after that for nothing. Good luck.

ALBACORE - Southern California Marlin On-line: HOOSE - Jul-03-00, 08:43 AM (PDT)
FYI....Will be on the beach with a bic lighter and the "Mexican Rockets" but if your out heres some info that was left on our BAC line. Some swords seen along the lee 1-3 off from the Domes to Fish Hook. The ridge east of Pyramid had a finner too. A friend on the 289 baited a tailer there Sunday, and caught yellows under a kelp. Saw a breezing school of dorado under the same kelp, but couldn't get a bite. There some greenies off the west Newport jetty and off Aliso beach. From SD, 35 miles 232 degrees - 20 albies. Bit early in the dark, purple black Tuna Clones, and loco joe color mid day. Wide open swords on the Flemish Cap...watch the weather.  Good luck,   Bob Hoose

ALBACORE - Affordable Marine:  Subject: Weekend Albie Hunt -Jeff "Terrafin"   Date: Tue, 4 Jul 2000
Hi Dennis, My hat is off to you for posting that late report Friday evening. Jeff, thanks for sharing your experience and most of all thanks for the numbers! I was unsure on what to do Friday evening because the SST info was not there and the water mix this week has been "rapid". All of my sources said go the the 43 but that place has been a Z00 because it is in range of the LA boats. I have more confidence going South for those Mexican fish anyway. We fished Saturday and Monday.

SATURDAY: Not many boats down there, saw maybe 6 or 7 all day (most were AMS boats). We got bit on the jigs as soon as we arrived in the area about 6:30am. Could only get a single jigstike at a time though. Decided to hoist the outriggers and just fish the flat lines, fish a bait on the slide. Still no takers on the slide but we were getting stopped once in a while. We fished some patties but most were empty. Around 11:00 things started to heat up. We finally had a stop that picked up the slider. After that, I slowed down the troll and pulled the
