Hi Dennis great site! I took my 23 foot Cobia out this morning from Mission Bay with Pattrick Riley. We  left the Jetty with a half scoop around 6:30 and were trolling the 371 within 45 min. We trolled the area with no luck and then heard some radio chatter of some fish 6.5 miles SW of the 425. On the way there we found a nice pattie loaded with yellowtail, these were mixed fish from 8-15 pounds, we landed seven and decided to leave them bitting and continue another few miles for the albacore. Once close to the spot we hooked up on a purple and black jet head a 15 pound fish the first for my boat this year! We worked the area with a dozen other boats and only caught one more fish, on a blue and white feather, a bigger fish around 20 pounds. The word on the radio was the bite on Wed. was at 2:00 but we had to go and had plenty of fish to clean so at 12:30 we ran in, the swell was smaller going in and were back near the bay cleaning fish by 1:30. We caught fish in the exact same area december 23 1999 but they were a little bigger.

Went out to Catalina on sunday and monday, incredible Calico Bass fishing in White's Cove, and on Monday morning we went to the backside by orange rock and the 3 V's for anything, but came up blank, as well, as everyone else fishing there. We decided to circle from the east end to the 277 to the 14 mile bank and back home to Alamitos Bay looking for paddies and yellows, but didn't see a single paddy the whole way...However, 1/2 mile from the 277 we saw a fairly large marlin jump only 50 feet in front of our boat. We slow trolled around the area for a while but no luck. Oh well! Where's those albacore for LA/Orange County?

According to J.D.'s Fish Reports more Marlin sightings up that way with a jumper at the 209 and a feeder between Avalon and Newport. The report recommends trolling flyers as it is a more natural bait for them at this time of the year. It won't be long now. And if you haven't already done so - sign up at J.D.'s for his "1st Marlin of the Millenium" Contest. Prize is a $250 gift certificate (i.e. shopping spree). I couldn't talk Doug Kern into another Fisherman's Landing Marlin-type contest.

Launched from SD  Monday morning at 6:30am with my Friends Tim, Josh, Herb  and my boy (Michael's first venture into Mex. waters). We headed for the 371 on slick seas hunting for the aFISHionado's first Ablie of the year.  Stopped ten miles short and started to troll Rapalas and Zucchini in 64/65 deg. crystal blue waters. Buy 10:00 I was starting to second guess my course when the call came across the wireless, "Albie is just south of the 371" With new found confidence I put the spurs to her and in minutes we glided up on a paddy with two other boats soaking bait. Nada. Decided to put the jigs back out and troll the neighborhood. Went for a quarter mile on a SW and then it happened. ZZZZzzzzz. I Didn't give in to the cries of hookup you fool slow down!, I held my course and speed for a good ten count and Zzzz,  Zzzz, TRIPLE HOOKUP. With lots of expert coaching (learned from reading my AMS site) we bloodied the boat with all three long fin. Later on in the day we landed two Yellows on bait then trolled toward the islands around 2:30. About halfway between the 371 and the Islands lightning struck again, Wham, I started my ten count, Balm, Grand slam, TRIPLE ALBIES AGAIN.    My son was crancking a 25 lber on a Rapala, Tim and I had 15s, Herb manned the gaff. We boated Tim's then Michael's, I waited for the gaff, it didn't come. As I gilled it by hand I heard, " Are you Ok?", "NO!"  While trying to unhook Michael's fish Josh had driven the Rapala into his index and middle finger. He was pinned to a 25 lb Albie  waiting to go into tail slaps. Two of us held the fish down and prayed while I grabbed my dykes. (everyone should carry a pair!) I cut the fist hook, it had gone all the way through so I wasn't to worried about it, we could get that one out. Then I could see the second. Buried to the bone. There wasn't much of the hook left to get at but Tim managed to clip it off before Albie went ballistic. Ice the finger down. Long trip back to the Ramp with lots of  chop. It took some novocaine and a scalpel to get the hook out. His comment afterwards was, "Well, we got Eight of them and they got one of us, all in all it was a pretty good day." All in all I guess it was but it's a hard way to learn about treble hooks and tail slapping Albies. Be careful out there.   Tight lines

My girlfriend Sybil Lovaas and I were trolling in the fog from middleground toward the 425 at about 8AM when we found a small paddy. We were about to leave after soaking baits around the paddy for about 15 or 20 minutes with no results when Sybil finally got hooked up. After about a 15 minute fight on 30# test, she landed the biggest yellowtail I've ever seen locally. When we finally weighed it in at Southwestern Yacht Club at about 4 in the afternoon It weighed 40.50 lbs. At Troy Grant's suggestion, we took it over to Hook, Line, and Sinker and weighed it in there to enter it in Dan Hart's contest where it is currently in the lead by a bunch. Great fish, and my girlfriend did an excellent job of fighting it. Barry Rockwell

Can you believe it? Catching albacore in May in those conditions? At 30 miles from the Point? Awesome. Here we were with a half a dozen boats with jig strikes and bait drop backs and 20# albacore. We ran on some numbers that Ed Medina(Tsunami) gave out on the air. No one else believed him (that's what one skunked boat told me). I don't know about you, but I can't wait to get back out there. I must admit it isn't wide open, but they were there. And poor Bruce Jackson(Happy Hunter) who ran to the 1010 trench for nada Friday.....hey Bruce , right after we talked I threw bait on birds on the way out to our South Island anchorage Friday eve and snagged a 10 pound yellow. When we got up Sat. morn and turned the corner to the 425 we found a paddy and limited out on yellows. Swarmed in boats we hear on Ch.72 this man Ed Medina giving out numbers for Albacore. We're out of this crowd and on our way as it was only 6 miles away. When we arrived on the exact numbers I saw a half dozen boats stopped in the water less than a quarter of a mile from these numbers....fishing bait. As I drove over the numbers the port long line went off with a strong pull peeling 30# out of a 12T Int'l so I dropped a bait back and got bit instantly. Gail's jig fish came unbuttoned at the boat and we gaffed my 19# baitfish. Now, we need to get Gail one and sure enough working our way over to the sitting boats another jig fish, this time boating a 22 pounder. With coolers full of yellows and albacore and ONE SARDINE LEFT ALIVE we departed for home. When I had enough time to look at where we were, it was 190 degrees, 30 miles from Point Loma. Usually, this time of year I am hunting makos and threshers, but with two very disappointing(skunked) trips FORGET THE DARN SHARKS, THEY'RE NOT HERE ANYWAY, THEY'RE UP AT DANA. Oh, roddin and reelin, oh what a feeling, casting my troubles away......shhhhhhh, don;'t tell anyone (-: Steve

From Steve aboard the Cyclops
We left point loma at dawn and flew out towards the 425 in flat seas. We saw albacore jumping about 5 miles shy of the 425 so in the jigs went. Soon we came across a nice patty pulled two nice Tails there. Found another patty about a mile up and there were tails everywhere they looked like mackerel under the boat. These were 8-12 lbs. and would only take bait. We could have caught them all day. We moved on south… smack on the 425 double jig strike landed one lost one nice 20-25 albacore. Jigs back in the water 10-15 min later we have another jig fish on and two bait fish. Picked singles up a couple times from they’re we ended up with 5 very nice fish lost 3 or 4 more. The SS Rapala 18 was the killer today purple and black cedar plug worked well also. 30 mph all the way home great day great fishing…must sleep now!

ALBACORE -  From Affordable Marine:     Subject: Hot Albies all over the Boat!
Date: Mon, 29 May 2000 11:14:23 -0700
Hi Dennis
I fished Saturday and Sunday. If you can get out soon, you can really nail them. These are 20-30# fish! The numbers I gave you really produced both days. I suggest starting about 4 mi west and about 5 mi. South of the 425. The water temp is (was) about 64 degrees for the entire area, no breaks. Look for the current breaks (slick water). Follow these current breaks to the Southeast. Work these breaks hard up and down for about 7 miles within the radius of the numbers I gave you. You will know when you are in the right place when you find paddies and flotsam. These paddies are loaded with quality size Yellows by the way. Troll speed was 6 knots. Look for jumpers but don't run over them. Stay about 200 yards off and let them come to you. I got multiple jig stops both days. Really exciting to have all of the trolling lines light up - one by one. You can usually get them all to go by waiting to pull the throttle back after the first line goes off. Forget the Rapalas use small feathers in the standard colors. Jet heads worked well on the inside short lines. Daisy chains always got hit first on the outriggers using small squid hoochies. Throw a little chum as soon as they light up and the Albies will be all around the boat. The bait really sucked from SD Bay. They won't touch it. I would suggest throwing small plastics (fishtraps), 3-4 inches in blue and yellow or lime green. I think Blue and Chrome castmasters or small iron in green and blue reeled in fast might work IMO (I did not try them). The guys got a little excited and farmed way too many. The mistake they made was trying to horse these large and hot fish in with the heavy troll lines. Suggest backing off the drags and letting them tire completely before color. Go get 'em now this is the bite we have been waiting for. Only 30 miles South of Point Loma. Good Luck, may you have bent rods and screaming drags!
Numbers: 32.06.00, 117.17.00 ,   This area is appoximately 31.5 miles from the entrance of Point Loma and you would take a 171 degree heading for one hour and 51 minutes @ 17 knots, just outside the tip of the fingerbank.

At the landing they tell me that the long range and day and a half boats are regularly getting limits (albacore, that is) and that the fish are steadily moving closer. Fishing in the one day range should pick up dramatically in about one week. Marty

Quick report. Very late for tomorrow but for you folks that are still searching here goes. Albies are here in force. Limit style fishing is possible now. Multiple stops on Jig strikes. multiple lines going off at once. Ouriggers first then the flat lines after about 6 seconds. Had all 4 lines screaming sometimes. Are they taking bait you Say? No way not this pathetic stuff. Disapointing to see Albies all over the boat and then watch them try to chase a bait while it just lays there...bad stuff both days. Go get'em now!!   32.06.00   117.14.00

ALBACORE - Allcoast Sportfishin "Sunday's Yellow's Below SD" Posted by Rex_SD on May-28-00 at 08:34 PM (PST)
Got a little bit of a late start but it wasn't that crowded, got lucky there. The fog was everywhere and a lot of private boaters were asking for GPS number's to find areas along the beach. In this fog, you really can't rely on landmarks.  We had a slow start but did manage to scratch out our limits of 10 for the two of us. Seven yellows were caught at off of Rosarito in 120 to 140 feet of water. Fish were in the area of 132' 21" / 117' 08" and to about a mile south. Six were caught on Blue and White CD-14s and one on a sardine. Best bite was from about 10:00 to 12:30.  At about 3:30, we headed to the South Coronado Island. At about a mile east of the southern end, we quickly caught our last three to make our limits. One was caught on a Blue and White CD-14 and the other 2 were caught on slow trolled sardines. All fish were about 10 1/2 pounds and the seas were very calm. Rex

ot an invitation to fish aboard Richard Fischer's 31 ft. Chris Craft Sportfisher. Her name is Go Fisch. We all met up at Richard's boat at 0100 Sat. in Oceanside. First mate Jerry, Johnny, and myself. We left the harbor in about 15 min. with bait tanks prefilled with sardines and anchovies. Headed out to the 42-fathom spot. Put out jigs at gray light. Trolled for about an hour but no takers. We then came upon a paddy with 2 Grey whales around it. We started taking some pictures when we noticed yellow tails around. We dropped our cameras and started fishing. Richard hooks up the first fish right away, I get one right after that. It was an awesome experience hearing whales spouting off all around us while we were fighting our fish. We stayed on this paddy for 4 fish and 3 farmed. We continued on, trolling and stopping on paddies here and there. But so far no albacore. So after hearing radio reports of albacore off the 425, we got together and decide to make the run down. When we got there, the bite seemed to have slowed down considerably. But we did get a jig strike in the mid-afternoon, between the 371 and the 425 somewhere. (Not quite sure, because I wasn't driving the boat. Sorry.) We scored the first Alby of the year for Go Fisch. It was a 20.13 pounder. Yeah baby! Trolled for a few more hours, but that was it for the day. Total count for the day was 9 Yellowtail, 1 Albacore, and 2 Blue Shark. Couldn’t ask for a better day on the water, glassy calm perfect conditions,    Great fishing, great people, great day.  Mark out.
