SMALL BOAT TOURNAMENT INFORMATION & RULES

  1. Tournament dates are Saturday, September 15th & Sunday, September 16th, 2001
  2. Entry is open to the general public, Marlin Club members, and to members of all angling clubs in southern California.
  3. A TEAM consists of one (1) boat with any number of anglers aboard.
  4. Only anglers may assist fellow anglers in any way whatsoever, such as placing tackle in or taking tackle out of the water, tying of leaders or in any other manner.
  5. Competition shall be on a point per pound basis. NO ACCUMULATIVE POINTS.
  6. 2ND day (Sunday) weigh-in shall be NO LATER than 5:00 pm. After weigh-in and picture taking, boats must be moved from the stand-by slips.
  7. Entry fee is $50.00 per angler and includes the barbecue (the for angler) on Sunday. Barbecue will be at The Marlin Club at 6:30 pm.
  8. Fish can be weighed in at any official weigh station. Weight slips must be faxed to the Marlin Club no later than 5:00 pm, Sunday (16th).
  9. Tackle can be any regulation tackle.
  10. Notice of a change of angler(s) must be given to a member of the Tournament Committee prior to fishing on the day said change occurs. A change of angler(s) on the 2nd day (Sunday) requires additional entry fee of $50.00 per angler.
  11. Prizes will be awarded as follows at the barbecue on Sunday, September 16th, 2001. Winning anglers will be limited to one (1) award.

MARLIN

TUNA**

**Minimum weight on tuna shall be 25 pounds. Tuna is defined to be Pacific Big eye Tuna, Yellow fin Tuna, and Blue fin Tuna

    12. Entry forms and entry fees should be received at The Marlin Club no later than September 14, 2001.

13. Small boat shall be defined to be up to and including 26 ft registered length.

14. In case of a tie a drawing between anglers will decide winners.

15. Total maximum number of entries will be 50 boats.

SMALL BOAT TOURNAMENT RULES AND REGULATIONS
    1. Angling rules and regulations shall be in accordance with International Game Fish Association’s rules and regulations. (Exception, see Rule #2 A & F).
    2. EQUIPMENT
      1. If a leader is used, the leader shall be limited to 15 ft. Combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 ft. The leader on all tackle over 20 lb. shall be limited to 15 ft. Combined length of double line and leader shall be limited to 20 ft.
      2. The rod tip must be a minimum of 40 inches in length. The rod butt cannot exceed 27 inches in length. These measurements must be made from a point directly beneath the center of the reel.
      3. For live or dead bait fishing, no more than two (2) single hooks may be used. Both must be firmly embedded in or securely attached to the bait.
      4. When using an artificial lure with a skirt or trailing material, no more than two (2) single hooks may be attached to the line, leader or trace. The hooks need not be attached separately. The eyes of the hooks must be no less than an overall hook’s length apart and no more than 12 inches apart. The only exception is that the point of one hook may be passed through the eye of the other hook. The trailing hook may not extend more than a hook’s length beyond the skirt of the lure.
      5. A gaff must not exceed 8 ft in overall length. In the case of a flying or detachable gaff, the line may not exceed 30 ft. Only a single, fixed prong or blade is permitted.
    3. ANGLING
      1. From the time that a fish strikes or takes a bait or lure, the angler must hook, fight and land or boat the fish without the aid of any other person, except as provided in these regulations.
      2. If a rod holder is used and a fish strikes or takes the bait or lure, the angler must remove the rod from the holder as quickly as possible.
      3. If a double line is used, the intent of the regulation is that the fish will be fought on the single line most of the time that it takes to land the fish.
      4. Once the leader is brought within grasp, or the end of the leader is wound to the rod tip, more than one person is permitted to hold the leader.
      5. One or more gaffers may be used in addition to persons hold the leader. The gaff handle must be in hand when the fish is gaffed.
      6. Anglers are limited to one Marlin per day. Once an angler has taken a Marlin he or she may NOT cast or drop back baits, but may assist in leadering and/or boating or deploying lines.
    4. THE FOLLOWING ACTS/SITUATIONS WILL DISQUALIFY A CATCH
      1. Failure to comply with equipment or angling regulations.
      2. The act of persons other than the angler in touching any part of the rod, reel or line (including the double line) either bodily or with any device during the playing of the fish or in giving any aid other than that allowed in the rules and regulations.
      3. Resting the rod in a rod holder, on the gunwale of the boat, or any other object while playing the fish.
      4. Handling or using a hand-line or rope attached in any manner to the angler’s line or leader for the purpose of holding or lifting the fish.
      5. When a rod breaks (while the fish is being played) in a manner that reduces the length of the tip below minimum dimensions or severely impairs its angling characteristics.
      6. Mutilation of the fish caused by sharks, other fish, mammals or propellers that remove or penetrate the flesh.
    5. WEIGH IN
      1. The angler must exhibit tackle when fish is weighed in. Any protest relative to weight of fish or manner of weighing must be made before fish is removed from scales. Any protest relative to tackle or manner of killing fish must be filed in writing with the Tournament Chairman, or his designee, on the same day as the disputed catch is made.
    6. Broadbill swordfish shall NOT be eligible for points or prizes. Any boat carrying Broadbill harpooning equipment (including harpooning guns) will be disqualified.

THE UNDERLYING PURPOSE OF THE SMALL BOAT MARLIN TOURNAMENT IS COMPETITION ON AN EQUAL BASIS. THE EQUALITY OF THIS COMPETITION IS MAINTAINED THROUGH THE RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE TOURNAMENT AND THE HONESTY AND GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP OF ALL THE PARTICIPANTS.
